In forty years of teaching, in both country and city schools, in single sex and co-ed schools, in private and public schools I found only one consistent indicator of future academic, sporting or indeed life success. Did they do their homework?
That is, the ability to stay on task, work unsupervised, and complete their assignments.
After 40 years teaching math, language arts, and music let me add four more related indicators of academic success: 1) children live with mom and dad; 2) parents who value and support learning of their children; 3) a book rich home. Parents who read books to children, age appropriate books children read on their own, and parents who model reading; and 4) learning to read music, in particular, playing an instrument--preferably the piano as a child learns to read both clefs and independent but coordinated hand movements.
You are absolutely correct of course. The most likely reason that a child regularly completes their homework is because they have loving concerned parents who value education. This in itself does not guarantee success but certainly improves the odds in its favour.
