I keep reading about NATO being formed shortly after WWII to contain the USSR. I was traveling in Europe in 1956, and Europeans I talked to had vivid memories of Germany rising twice in their lifetime. They wanted to be protected from Germany, not the USSR. And my recollection is that NATO was formed partly to reassure the first members -- all of whom had been attacked by the Nazi regime in the previous decade -- that Germany would not rise again. Yes, Stalin was at a high point of his power, but he was not the threat that Germany had very recently been.

I lived in Belgium in the early 80’s. One day while walking in Brussels I stopped an elderly woman to ask for directions. Due to my lousy French accent, with daggers in her eyes, she immediately asked if was German. When I said no, that I was an American, she burst into a huge grin and gave me my directions. She remembered. If I had told her that I was German, she probably would have beat me with her cane.

Two corrections:

1.: In 1956 Stalin was not "at a high point of his power". By then his corpse had been on display on Red Square for 3 years, with long lines of Russians shuffling past his glass box, in a sort of low-budget version of Sleeping Beauty without the prince.

And 2.: While in 1956 there were still a lot of bad feelings about the Germans -- inevitably, because a lot of people had been killed, maimed, persecuted and impoverished -- by that time the Russian threat had taken their place. We took it as given that not much could be done when their nuclear bombs started flying.

To illustrate that mood: We had a neighbor woman who was borderline crazy, or worse, who would scream at us kids in our backyard over nothing, and one day she went: "When the Russians come they'll take you to Siberia!"

Americans knowledge of European History is Zero. Other than the Hollywood version of D-Day, they would know nothing.

Millions of Germans were killed after WWII, as vengeance. And Eastern Europe especially, people are taught, just like Israelis and Palestinians, to hate each other.

Sleepy time is over, time to wake up from the American Dream.

Expand full comment

Europeans have been in conflict with one another since time began. As for millions of Germans being killed after wwii, I find this to be untruthful. Perhaps you speak of the East Germans who were under the Stasi regime. Millions were not killed.

Israeli’s are not taught to hate anyone sir. Hate is a pill you swallow in the hopes someone else gets sick. Israeli’s dislike the hateful things the so-called Palestinians (it’s a made up term) do. One more thing, Jews worldwide are not putting up the hate directed at them anymore. Not going to happen again. NEVER.

Millions of Germans were killed in countries that took out vengeance at the end of the war. But you already know that.

Letting your neighbors kill you is not a clever strategy. Fighting back and eliminating the threat is not clever, it is mandatory. Believe what you will but when your enemies know you are stronger and more committed than you NEVER AGAIN will be the order of the day. Millions of Germans. Laughable. They died fighting a war. Hmm....

You believe millions of Germans, living in other countries, were not killed after the end of the WWII. So be it.

It was Nazis, who encouraged European Jews to move to Palestine, among other things. And those same Nazis killed millions of other People's, Gypsies, Soviets. The tragedy of European Jews was not isolated to European Jews. Dresden, like Hiroshima and Nagasaki, was a decision, and an easy target.

If you don't want your future to be precisely what you claim you don't want it to be. Learn alternatives besides ratcheting up bloodshed.

After all, the Nazis killed card-carrying Nazis to consolidate power. Ask Ernst Rohm

I should have worded my comment more carefully.

Stalin was at a high point of his power when NATO was formed in 1949, not when I was in Europe in 1956. i remember his death in 1953.

Again, my experience in 1956 did not reflect the mood in Europe when NATO was formed, but it was instructive to me that the mood I experienced was still concerned with Germany as much as, or more than with the USSR. I don't know what years your comment about neighbors screaming at you was noted, or where it took place. And I am surprised your neighbor referred to 'the Russians" and not the Soviets.

Expand full comment

Actually, in 1949 Stalin had just been defeated by Harry Truman's airlift to Berlin, and that conflict of slightly less than a year must have increased the Europeans' eagerness to join NATO -- also because their economies were still recovering. But I'm inclined to think that by now, Europe is wealthy enough to increase their military spending to a level that will discourage Russia, and the US absolutely must quite the deficit spending or there's going to be an economic catastrophe.

The crazy neighbor incident would have occurred in the late 'forties or early 'fifties. And nobody I knew referred to the Russians as "Soviets". Maybe that's something American, like describing the Germans as "Nazis" which, despite all the crimes of the Nazi regime, ordinary Germans don't deserve, certainly not anymore.

But getting seriously into all that is bound to take us clear back to WWI, and the wisdom of Wilson to get the US involved in that. Did I say wisdom? Wilson's lack if wisdom. When you try to figure out how that war started, it looks like an enormous mistake produced by a lot of incompetent politicians, on all sides. And by 1917 the war in the west -- in Belgium and northern France -- was in a mass-murdering stalemate, and if the US had not intervened, it seems inevitable that there would have been a settlement soon. A settlement that would have been less vindictive on the allied side, that would not have dismembered Germany, and hence much less likely to sow the seeds for WWII.

And this is why quite a few historians look at the two World Wars as one war, from 1914 to 1945, interrupted halfway by an unproductive break of about 18-19 years.

One more correction. You cannot speak of "Germany" in 1956 as there were two of them.

New York Times said, “Favoring Foes Over Friends, Trump Threatens to Upend International Order.” Our friends are few and far between and with few exceptions like Japan and Taiwan would jump ship in a heartbeat. At least Japan has made a move to alter its policies to be able to defend itself. Taiwan has an army of a half million men ready to defend itself. Most of our so called friends will be the friend of whomever provides the biggest paychecks and the most lavish cocktail parties. The number of dictators in the UN is staggering and our reliance on any one of them would be beyond foolish.

I would not say we should cut defense spending, I would say we should spend it more wisely on the future of our own defenses. With the world on a slide toward communism and starvation, we are going to need retooling, rethinking, and most of all strong leadership to have the vision to do both while rebuilding a strong and vibrant economy that will handle. Only one name comes to mind when listing these goals and we all know who that is.

Shrugged, the strength in numbers is a moot point. Our only defense is M.A.D. As we see in Ukraine. It is difficult to win a ground war. WWII, Germany had 18 years to prepare, both in military strength and in human mental strength to launch an invasion against a depleted and decadent Europe after WWI. If France or England had nukes at the time Hitler would not have done much(unless he developed photon torpedoes or Phasers). There is no need for a militarized nato in 2024.

Democracy worth saving? What democracy? We certainly don’t have it in this country. This is another distraction from the real story that the president has no brain. You don’t have to be a doctor like me to realize that this guy is so impaired that he couldn’t lead himself to the bathroom let alone be the leader of the free world.

On the other hand, somebody in the White House decided it was a great idea to release a video of Mr. Biden bringing fried chicken to a black family and sitting around the meal asking questions. The only stereotypic trope they forgot was to bring watermelon for dessert. Who in the White House came up with this idea ? The true joke is on anybody who votes for this dimwit. In truth, America, under an America First/MAGA Administration, will have only a true handful of likeminded Allies in the world.

Hungary, Japan, Taiwan, now Argentina, Israel (once the O’Biden administration is gone, and Iran put back in a box), and perhaps a few others, but just a few.

Nearly every single other country is either full-fledged Communist/ Socialist, and/or has bent the knee to the Golden Calf of the WEF’s New World Order, and that includes Canada and Mexico.

We will not be “isolationist”, we will be isolated in terms of our fundamental raison d’etre: our “claimed reason for the existence; the sole or ultimate purpose of being. (literally "reason to be").” That reason for being: the Constitution of the US, and the Judeo-Christian values that underpin it.

That’s fine by me.

But we’ll need first to rid from within our own midst everyone here who opposes that reason for being, as well.

We’ve got our work cut out for us.

Shut down the Department of Education, period!

Families use tax incentives to decide their children's education, private or homeschool, mandating that all Americans must take US and World History and Civics courses, incorporated with mandated English only, math, all sciences, especially biology.

Destroy Wokeism, everywhere in the USA or get the hell out! Enforce the criminal and mental health laws. Open the closed mental health facilities and get rid of the mentally ill running our schools, hospitals, and businesses via any constitutional means necessary.

Pass legislation abolishing most sections of the Obamacare mandate, especially that which deals with encouraging mutilation and destruction of our children. Anything relating to encouraging and paying for transgender mutilation is abolished! Shut down hospitals and prosecute any and all medical professionals participating in destruction and mutilation of American children.

Reestablish the nuclear family by encouraging couples to get married and procreate, with family tax incentives.

Encourage small family farms, with tax deduction incentives. Allow Americans to decide what they want to put in their bodies for nourishment, not the corporate farmers led by the government, even those from other countries.

It's time for Americans to take care of Americans first. Only then will America be great again.
