The mention of micro-plastics burns my biscuits. Why can’t “the science” leave us alone to live in peace? No. These control freaks (commies if you like) insist that my every waking moment I must live in fear of everything around me—what I eat or don’t eat, how much sleep I get, how much I exercise or don’t, what foods I buy: organic or not, air pollution, SSRIs in our water supply, the fear of cancer or Alzheimer’s, and now how having microplastics in my body predisposes me to major health issues.
After the scamdemic lies and manipulations, I refuse to play the fear games “the science” promotes. Even before, I was always wary of “experts” especially in the medical field. Now I’m done. After all, I’m not getting off this planet alive anyway. I can choose to think for myself and live free.

I was referring to the old cloth bags, not plastic ones. Plastic is easier to clean. The cloth bags retained moisture which the bacteria thrive in. The modern push backwards to them in the name of green has people putting produce in direct contact with whatever was on the last stuff they hauled home that is now growing in the fibers. Add to that things which make incidental contact and you have a recipe for a doctor visit.
Some people disinfect them, but many are lazy. A study several years ago involved examiners doing swabs on reusable bags at the entrance to stores. The vast majority were as filthy as the parking lot. Maybe worse, sunlight would kill bacteria growing in the parking lot.

Years back I made a trip to Florida to visit an uncle. Along part of the route I passed fields of trees that were in different stages of growth, every tree in a field was the same size, but none were large. My uncle said those stands were for the paper mills, a fast growing type of pine tree that wasn't suitable for lumber. Judging by the variety of heights, I'd speculate that none were more than ten years old.
I grew up in the fifties in a paper mill town. All day every day truck loads of logs labored to the hill in to town and down to the mill. The mill ran 24/7 over a hundred years
Wish that I had the choice. Our former demonicrat mayor banned plastic bags in grocery stores in our city. But you can still get a plastic bag in a drugstore. Go figure.
Btw the plastic that items are wrapped in is useful too. It protects my food from the bacteria that is undoubtedly lurking in the small collection of sturdy plastic tote bags I've ended up buying and reusing endlessly.

I just want to take this time to say that I wish I had the same green thumb for gardening as you seem to have. I grew up with my first generation, English grandparents in Western Pennsylvania. Rich, black, soft dirt grew everything. I imagined my life enjoying gardening as my grandmother and grandfather had enjoyed all their lives. Sadly, God planted me in dismal, red clay Georgia.
But I still have memories of English gardens that I will treasure forever.
The New England soil in my suburban yard is a crazyquilt of substance. It's that lovely rich black soft soil in some places, but also compacted and clayish in others, along with sandy, or dry and used up by weeds in others.
I enjoy trying to outwit the weeds and work with it. I move a lotta stuff around...

You are right that the big box stores have far cheaper ones for sale that are thin (though strong), but made of some grey plastic that just feels weird to the touch. I bought only a couple before stopping.
That sounds exactly like the clown show in NYC some years back when the mayor banned “Big Gulps” from some, but not all stores. The bodegas had different restrictions than street vendors, etc.
I do my best to avoid CVS. Even with all the coupons they send me - Like 40% off your order, $5 off one item, etc - they are considerably more expensive than the supermarkets or online markets like Iherb or Vitacost. Then when you buy that one item at CVS, you get a 2-foot long receipt with a whole bunch of coupons to try to get you to come back.
Trust me, Joe, nobody hates CVS more than a former employee, especially store management (raises hand). If there is a worse company to work for, I have never found it.
When I walk into a CVS (which is rare), I almost get dizzy with all the signs on the shelves - it's like everything in the store is on sale - when in reality their prices are higher than any place else. Last time I had to go there is when my wife really needed a product called D'Mannose for a UTI infection & couldn't wait for me to order it online. Even with a $4 coupon, the price at CVS was more than double what it costs on Iherb or Vitacost. The supermarkets don't carry this product.

Yes, and for a long time, Starbucks plastic cups were not made of #1 or #2 plastic, which is recyclable, but #5 plastic, which is NOT recyclable. #5 is stronger than #1 or #2, so that is likely why Starbucks used it. But for YEARS, that was a HUGE number of non-recyclable plastic cups being put into the world by Starbucks. A HUGE hypocrisy for liberals to never called them out on it.

Aruba banned plastic straws in 2020 - so restaurants in Aruba starting using useless paper straws. My wife likes to use straws on those tropical & frozen drinks, so she brings about 50 or so straws every vacation - surprised they haven't busted her at customs.
Math is hard. I generally enjoy Judge Willet, but his belief that his sister walked 250,000 miles during her career as a waitress is nuts--you'd have to walk 18 miles a day, 250 days a year, for 55 years to reach 250,000 miles. Just for reference, 10,000 steps is just over 4 miles.
While the number may be a little inflated his point is spot on. I put a tracking collar on my Springer and went for a walk. I walked about two miles but the tracker showed the dog had walked twice as far. Don’t underestimate a good waitresses ability to rack up the miles in an eight hour shift in a cafe that is always understaffed. Not many overweight waitresses out there for a reason.
In college I worked as a waitress in a restaurant which was a city block long from the front door to the back door of the kitchen. If I was working a station at the front and a diner asked for extra salad dressing, it was a two block walk to get it to the customer. I never did the math, but I remember how exhausted I was at the end of a shift.
Having cooked and mixed for waitresses and waiters I can tell you a good waitress /waiter only stops when on break spending work hours in high gear and never empty handed.

Up here we have sturdy thick plastic bags with strong cloth handles in all the groceries - the good ones cost about a buck or more apiece.
You are right that the big box stores have far cheaper ones for sale that are thin (though strong), but made of some grey plastic that just feels weird to the touch. I bought only a couple before stopping.

And CVS wastes even more paper with their endless receipts.
I do my best to avoid CVS. Even with all the coupons they send me - Like 40% off your order, $5 off one item, etc - they are considerably more expensive than the supermarkets or online markets like Iherb or Vitacost. Then when you buy that one item at CVS, you get a 2-foot long receipt with a whole bunch of coupons to try to get you to come back.

Trust me, Joe, nobody hates CVS more than a former employee, especially store management (raises hand). If there is a worse company to work for, I have never found it.
When I walk into a CVS (which is rare), I almost get dizzy with all the signs on the shelves - it's like everything in the store is on sale - when in reality their prices are higher than any place else. Last time I had to go there is when my wife really needed a product called D'Mannose for a UTI infection & couldn't wait for me to order it online. Even with a $4 coupon, the price at CVS was more than double what it costs on Iherb or Vitacost. The supermarkets don't carry this product.
You can buy plastic bags on Amazon. That’s what I did. I have a thousand of them and I so enjoy pulling them out in the grocery stores.

Yes, and for a long time, Starbucks plastic cups were not made of #1 or #2 plastic, which is recyclable, but #5 plastic, which is NOT recyclable. #5 is stronger than #1 or #2, so that is likely why Starbucks used it. But for YEARS, that was a HUGE number of non-recyclable plastic cups being put into the world by Starbucks. A HUGE hypocrisy for liberals to never called them out on it.

I think the last time I used a straw was in kindergarten. Always thought it seemed kind of juvenile. The exception is when you are laying in a hospital bed and want to drink something. Guess they have a purpose in that case.

Got to disagree on Al Gore. He is not dumb at all, he was very smart. And in the beginning, very sincere. He recognized the importance of caring for the earth early on and publicized that need. I really liked his first book, "Earth in the Balance". I also voted for him for President, over George Bush, who was indeed dumb.
Later, Al Gore deteriorated, and became, as people sometimes do, "caricatures of themselves". The "noble environmentalist" title went to his head, and he lost touch with reality, going deep into climate change, and being willing to lie ("exaggerate") in order to "protect" the Earth.
In England, they called Gore out on the movie version of "An Inconvenient Truth" for actually including UNtruths. Gore ADMITTED in Court he had exaggerated, but said it was "for a good cause" to make people pay attention. But England said the movie couldn't be shown unless it was corrected, and Gore did indeed make the changes for the version of the movie shown in England. (Of course, this was England a couple decades ago, not the England it is today.)

Yes, my caveat is that the "early"/"young" version of Al Gore had some good qualities. And it could be that Bush was smarter than he seemed. He was definitely not very articulate, so that may have made him seem less intelligent.
I guess all our leaders are just people, with strengths and weaknesses. But Trump is exceptional, in that his strengths are really awesome and well developed, and he has mitigated his weaknesses to some extent. Trump is in truth a "Very Stable Genius".

The last time I remember needing a straw was sixty years ago. We only had one six pack between three or four of us teenagers so we sipped beer through a straw believing we could get a buzz off of the bubbles. Can't remember if it worked or not... I have used straws in restaurants for decades because I trust a wrapped disposable straw for cleanliness as opposed to tumblers washed in a comercial dishwasher.
Ever check the temperature of the hot water in those machines? Hot enough to take the hide off your hand in a second. I remember basic training in the Army. We had to stop using the machines when on Kip because they got so hot that people were getting severe burns from them. Guess no one knew how to adjust the water temp just like no one knew how to make the potato peeling machine work correctly. Ah, great times.

I knew that Cress’ calculation was BS the moment I heard it. I use, maybe, 20 plastic straws a year. Not a day. A year. Not the 586 straws which Cress believes that I am using. And it’s always in restaurants where the straw helps me drink my glass of water without dumping the ice in my lap. Happily, I live in a red state where I am automatically given a plastic straw with my drink.
If leftists want to complain about the use of plastic, they should go spend a few days in any American hospital. Pretty much everything used is made from plastic, comes wrapped in plastic and is single use. It goes right from your bed into the trash. The caveat is that those items are sterile. Do they really want to trust some DEI hire to insure that metal products are properly sterilized before use? Count me out.
Aruba banned plastic straws in 2020 - so restaurants in Aruba starting using useless paper straws. My wife likes to use straws on those tropical & frozen drinks, so she brings about 50 or so straws every vacation - surprised they haven't busted her at customs.

While the number may be a little inflated his point is spot on. I put a tracking collar on my Springer and went for a walk. I walked about two miles but the tracker showed the dog had walked twice as far. Don’t underestimate a good waitresses ability to rack up the miles in an eight hour shift in a cafe that is always understaffed. Not many overweight waitresses out there for a reason.
In college I worked as a waitress in a restaurant which was a city block long from the front door to the back door of the kitchen. If I was working a station at the front and a diner asked for extra salad dressing, it was a two block walk to get it to the customer. I never did the math, but I remember how exhausted I was at the end of a shift.
A health club before there were health clubs. I still marvel at how fast a good waitress is in a cafe with minimal staff.
Having cooked and mixed for waitresses and waiters I can tell you a good waitress /waiter only stops when on break spending work hours in high gear and never empty handed.
