The Trouble with battery operated cars is that they are mainly driven by virtue signalling a**holes!

TISI&IGISI!

Expand full comment

Who get really nasty when you point out that the electricity for their cars comes from coal and oil.

Expand full comment

And don’t even mention the waste stream from EV’s. That really makes them mad. Guess that’s why I always do it.

Expand full comment

I love the internet meme: picture of a long coal train labeled EV fuel

Expand full comment

Yep, and for every coal plant we shut down China is building 15 more of them. Clearly, there is a part of this country, primarily in the ruling class, that are dumber than the coal they hate so much. Most of us just call them morons.

Expand full comment

Thanks for doing the dirty job for me. I don't want to break a nail. LOL

Expand full comment

Just giving someone the finger takes care of most problems you will incur while driving.

Expand full comment

You must be from Boston. LOL Instead of using turn signals before a turn they use the middle finger after cutting someone off in order to make the turn.

Expand full comment

I lived in Boston for 25 years. I loved it, but I would never move back and yes, I have had some officers here make comments on my (lack of)_driving skills.😊

Expand full comment

I rode with the pastor of a downtown mission church for a week? Meanest most aggressive drivers the US. I've been though New York City twice, loved driving to downtown Chicago during rush hours, lived near Disneyland with my first wife, babysat Mary's grandkids near LA airport and drove them all over LA during rush hours, worked 2 years days in the mills of Gary and Hammond.

Boston is by far the worst. Not even close.

Expand full comment

They even wrote a song about "You Drive Like a Nashvillian. but I can't find a copy of the lyrics anywhere. Might have been a one-off by a long past DJ.

Expand full comment

Boston has some of the worst drivers I've ever seen. As far as the worst in The United States, I've heard that award would go to Atlanta. I mean what nice thing could you possibly say about a state or even a city that would make a gorilla like Stacy Abrams in charge of anything that requires intelligence. YIKES !!

Expand full comment

I disagree. I've been through Atlanta multiple times. Worse than anyplace else but still a ways back from Boston. And before you ask, does anybody remember the Johnny Cash song I'VE BEEN EVERY WHERE BOYS?!

Expand full comment

I have never heard of this particular Johnny Cash song nor did I ever say I had ever driven in Atlanta. I drove for UBER/LYFT for about three years making many airport runs. When I asked people about where NOT to drive and Atlanta was the clear cut winner. Yes, Boston sucks, but I lived there and had to deal with it on an every day basis.

I love that song, and the one he wrote about working in a Cadillac factory taking home a car, one piece at a time. Johnny and June!!

This just floors me. 'But there is hope the propaganda falls on deaf ears because “experts say” has become a red flag that what you are about to hear or read belongs on the manure heap.' About being called an "Expert?" Why is it that the ONLY people called "Experts" come from within the government hierarchy? If they knew anything about what they were doing, they wouldn't be working for any government agency. Their only hope of being employed is if one of their relatives or friends get elected and then it is called nepotism. Look at Anthony Fauci, our former "Infectious Disease Expert." Since when does someone who NEVER had a medical client privately or publicly become anything in life, but in government circles, he is called an "expert." I sure as hell wouldn't want someone as useless (.....and stupid, like his boss Biden) performing a Colonoscopy on me.

As far as EV's go, if you can afford one and/or have a fire in one, you could probably equate that with an early trip to HELL and there is NO coming back.

Expand full comment

"Expert": we can break that down into two syllables: "Ex", meaning "former", and "Spurt", meaning "liquid drip under pressure". So an "expert" can be defined as a "former drip under pressure".

Oh, the phrase, "Experts say", is akin to the opening phrase, "Once upon a time...", for fairy tales.

Expand full comment

Glad to have you take a well-deserved swipe at "the medical expert", Dr Fauci, who loudly proclaimed. "I am the science " Our national megalomaniac who killed and ruined many lives!

Rand Paul is aggressively pursuing charges against Fauci for blatantly lying to Congress (and the American people, many of whom died because of his misinformation). Few are vocally supporting Rand Paul. Where is Congress on this? The evidence is clear -he lied, people died. Even the conservatives don’t care.

Look at all the politicians, like that bitch Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan or Charlie Baker of Massachusetts, who ordered the "MURDER" of thousands by confining the elderly to nursing homes and not having to face the consequences of their actions (I haven't forgotten the actions of fellow governors in California and New York). For some reason, most of those murders came at the hands of DEMOCRAT politicians, yet not one has been held responsible. What are the RINOS, like Mitt Romney, afraid of? Being 'punished' for doing the job he was elected to do.??

2. lack of charging stations available across the country

3. how to re-charge your battery during a power blackout

4. Cobalt mining uses child slave labor and causes fatal lung damage to these children

5. Lithium mining is bad for the environment

6. what to do with all those EV batteries when they are no longer useful? They are environmentally hazardous to dispose of

7. power inefficiency and wastage from plant to battery and from battery to engine

So exactly how are these vehicles an improvement for society?

I read recently that another issue is that while you can always sell a used gas-powered vehicle, there is almost no market for used EVs.

Expand full comment

The reason is limited useful life. The battery has a 10-year lifespan before needing a replacement at many thousands of dollars. Internal combustion engines (ICE) can run hundreds of thousands of miles with reliable but generally simple services like changing the oil regularly.

ALL "green" "energy" (solar panels, windmills and batteries) are HORRIBLY ANTI-ENVIRONMENTAL, from manufacturing to use to disposal!

The environmental (and humanitarian, ie. child labor) problems with manufacturing were discussed in this blog post. The 'use' was only touched upon - both the windmills and solar panels are apparently extremely detrimental to wildlife. In addition to EV fires is that their fires become a HAZMAT scene. And the disposal of all 3 categories of "green" pollute the soil and ground water with all the toxic heavy metals and rare earth minerals which are needed for their manufacture.

It boggles my mind that lefties don't cancel green energy!

But they do what they're told.

Note: Uber lefty Michael Moore of all people MADE A MOVIE "Planet of the Humans" that does blast "clean energy" -

If some stranger's car came to a stop at the end of my driveway I'd be far quicker to offer him my can of mower gas than run 60 feet of extension cord for the next few hours.

I have a coworker who commutes with a little, battery-powered BMW, it's cute. He designed and built his own solar power array and storage system that runs his home. We're in Florida and he only has utility power as a backup and convenience. Oh, and he still has his 90s Ford Ranger because he's too sensible to be dependent on that stuff.

Unless you're this guy and I doubt you want to be, drive a gas car.

Not mentioned is the fact that lithium and cobalt mines are frequently found in rain forest areas and it requires the demolishing of those forests to get to the minerals. Seem like it wasn’t that long ago that environmentalism was all about the desperate need to save the rain forests. Where did that go?

Expand full comment

Expand full comment

Very good Substack, thanks. I appreciate how you laid out the issues succinctly and with compassion for the little guys. EV's are not safe and not environmentally friendly. Electricity still has to be generated!

Expand full comment

Every winter, there seems to be a major storm that causes cars to stop on the highway for h hours, sometimes days. With EVs, they will all run out of power. Many of The drivers will freeze to death. And it will take weeks to recharge all of the dead batteries. Makes me wish there really was such a thing as global warming.

Expand full comment

And, if the car stops, they can't get out of it because nothing works.

Expand full comment

Another downside to the electric car is its weight which tears up the roads. There are too many negatives on this pig to make it look good with a simple tube of lipstick. Sorry folks but this idea is going the way of the dodo bird. Americans are just not going to buy these little bomblets and put their children in them. Sooner or later the child is going to yell, "this emperor has no clothes" and the world will finally wake up to reality.

That gas guzzler is the best thing that ever happened to humanity. There is a reason we have the fairy tale about the Emperor and his clothes, this is not the first time in history that people have been sold a bill of goods and it will hardly be the last. It is an expensive lesson but the fact is the truth will out on this one soon because you can't hide these problems. Fires on highways filled with wall to wall traffic should be enough to make us all come to our senses on this fiasco.

Can you imagine a 30-car pileup on the interstate as we often see in the news if everyone was driving an EV?

BTW did the drivers in your video make it out alive?

Expand full comment

As a rural volunteer firefighter, nothing scares our department more than an EV fire. Glad our coverage area is not near any 4 lane highways. We don’t have enough water, foam or manpower to fight an EV fire. If we ever have one, we will let it burn out and try to prevent the fire from spreading.

Expand full comment

Same here brother hose puller. Exactly. We just had a hybrid catch on fire(much smaller battery) and by the time we got there(within 4 mins) the vehicle was completely flashed over and we couldn't put out the fire. Things got fun when the gas tank started to melt...

Expand full comment

....And then you will catch hell from the environmentalists for adding "God only knows" pollutants to the stratosphere by doing nothing. Never mind how many of your fellow firefighters who may die in the process. If you think I am kidding, after the near disaster on the Hudson a few years back, enviromentalists were complaining about how many geese died vs how many people who would have died, had it not been for the exceptional flying skills of the pilot.

Expand full comment

The only environmentalists here are the best environmentalists, hunters and fishermen. No bedwetters allowed here. The newer cars have so much plastic and chemicals in them that the fires are about the most toxic we face - EVs wouldn’t change much in that regard.

Expand full comment

I am not going to compare stats with an expert (You), but me having a new car is testament to the amount of plastic there is on new cars. You have my sympathies, sir and I promise this: when my parents heard or saw an ambulance or fire truck when we were children, they always said "Please God, not a child." Amen! Any autos added to this rebel’s inventory are going to be Mustangs 1965-1972 simply because they’re:

A) Very well made

B) Reliable

C) Parts are ubiquitous

+ I always demand manual shift; every car I’ve ever owned has been manual shift. Once again less to go wrong + if your battery dies you get it on an incline & roll it downhill - pop the clutch - & your engine roars to life! When I ordered my last Mustang from BH Ford they looked @ me like I was from the planet Alderaan when I specified manual shift. I responded, “Do I look like some kind of limp-wristed candy a**?” {they didn’t know how to respond to that comment}. When I was full time in rush hour L.A. traffic I could drink coffee, load, fire up & smoke a pipe {tobacco} & shift all @ the same time. ;<)

It’s a breeze man.

I’ve seen/heard since where manual shift is now considered an “anti-theft device”; if true that is indeed a sad commentary on the state of manly affairs.

Expand full comment

As to Don's question / concern about "the man" forcing people out of gas-powered engine cars by outlawing their repair or the supply of gas stations etc, that is a big concern of mine.

My hope is that if that does ever happen, then either an underground market will develop to service the market, OR I'll be dead by the time it fully happens!

Or 3rd possibility is that select states (FL. Maybe TX, etc) become 'combustion engine sanctuaries' and will refuse to cave to the leftist lunacy and continue as we currently are.

However, driving out of state would become a no-man's-land roll of the dice!

Expand full comment

Don't want to get too far into conspiracy theory mode this early in the morning, but one has to ask why this is being pushed so hard when there isn't infrastructure (or enough electricity from the grid) to run it. My only conclusion is the government wants to limit our travel and ability to move beyond 25 miles from where we live. It is an institutionalized shutdown a la COVID lockdown. Control through limiting resources and access.

Expand full comment

I think you’re solidly accurate, that the “leaders” at the top want to limit our mobility.

But the overall multi-faceted fiasco of EV’s just shows the gross incompetence of most liberal endeavors, including nearly any government “program”. Flagrantly idealistic intentions followed by super crappy implementation, and close to zero results— and often even very negative results.
