Mad Magazine lost it years ago...there was a retrospective of the magazine at the Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, MA this past summer....it went from being non-partisan and funny to flacking for liberals over 30 years ago....you can see the pivot in the exhibit....which is too bad - as kids we used to fight over who was going to read it first.....

Expand full comment

That explains why I thought it had gone extinct.

BTW, I have quite a few Rockwell Saturday Evening Post posters: they are copies of that week's post cover, enlarged to 22' x 28", and some from the 1930s. Unlike today's arrogant "artistes", Rockwell was an incredibly skilled but modest man, who described himself as a mere "illustrator".

I loved Mad Magazine, especially the folding puzzle - usually a sarcastic result - on the inside back cover.

I am immeasurably thankful that Trump picked Vance as VP. He is very smart and very self reliant and does not depend on people he doesn’t know for his self confidence. He learned that you can’t blame your parents for things you do after you are 18 and he made a substantial life for himself. Recovered children of addicts have earned their peace of mind and know what is really important.

On behalf of the country - I hope he has the real commitment to fundamental principles of freedom that he demonstrates now so that he can aggressively defend them during Trump’s term and then his own. The totalitarians and globalists are right now planning the attack on him specifically half way through Trump’s term. The bureaucrats don’t plan to cooperate with any Trump administration and there will be fighting every damned day.

“Tax experts reject the notion that tariff revenue could offset the losses incurred by eliminating income taxes.”

Don't trust this. I'm a tax expert and they didn't consult me. Every loon that comments on this fails to understand that, in the present century, the purpose of tariffs is not to raise revenue. They correctly point out that any revenue that they do raise comes out of domestic consumers' pockets, but they refuse to learn that the real purpose is negotiate better trade deals with countries that are playing us for fools, and profiting thereby.

Thing is the “October Surprise”; the Dems are beyond desperate - Kamala’s Komic Kampaign Katastrophe Kontinues - but think they will pull something & - dovetailing with Biden who just made a comment on camera about “locking up” Trump - “we have to lock him up” - the sentencing in the Chutkan trial is coming up. Chutkan is a compromised judge; his daughter has raised millions for the Dems which begs the question why was he not forced to recuse himself? But I digress; the Dems are so desperate what’s to stop them from locking him up? IMHO they’re looking to spark a violent reaction in Trump’s supporters (aka “the Bubba Effect”) so they can bring the hammer down in another Reichstag Fire moment (Jan 6 was the first). SecDef Austin just issued that DOD directive stating the military could be called in to quell “domestic disturbances”. That seems like an end run around the Posse Comitatus Act, that which forbids the use of Federal troops for law enforcement.

Expand full comment

Know who I ultimately blame for this? Abe Lincoln. The trash tried to take themselves out in 1861 & because of tariffs on southern ports (among other economic issues) he sent the Federal Army down into the south to force them back into the Union @ the point of a bayonet.

Expand full comment

Slavery was the defining issue. Tariffs were a side issue and the south didn’t leave the Union over tariffs. Only when Lincoln was about to be inaugurated did they leave and he never campaigned on raising tariffs. Like today tariffs are a minor issue. BTW if taxes are reduced and tariffs raise some prices wouldn’t the workers of the country do better? Wouldn’t those European manufacturers who are energy starved build their factories in our right to work States and raise everyone’s standard of living.

Expand full comment

Slavery was NOT the defining issue; that’s BS post 1960’s historical revisionism. Back then - outside of the radical abolitionists like John Brown - you couldn’t find a white man who would lay down his life to free the blacks. During General George B. McClellan’s time in command, he worried the army would “lay down until moss grew on their backs” vis-a-vis waging an official “war against slavery.” In Lincoln’s own words, “my primary duty is to save the Union; if I could do it by freeing all the slaves I would do it. If I could save it by freeing none of them I would do it & if I could save it by freeing some & leaving others alone I would also do that.”

The Emancipation Proclamation was a political master stroke issued after the Battle of Antietam (Sep 17, 1862) to preclude Britain & France coming into the war on the side of the south. By this Lincoln reframed the war - both countries had already outlawed slavery - & this Proclamation put them back on their heels & ultimately they declined to get directly involved. Both countries though still supported the south - the British 1853 pattern Enfield Rifled Musket was the standard arm of the Confederate Army, for example & it was heavily imported.

Expand full comment

Yes, but "saving the Union" was code for "We see the potential for creating on this continent the mightiest empire ever seen, so we don't want to break it up while we're still working on that."

I hasten to add that I don't think that creating that empire was a bad idea. On the contrary, it has done far more good than bad. But with regard to Lincoln, it was Bismarck who observed, "People never lie so much as before the election, in war, and after the hunt."

Yesterday's range outing by Kinsinger and Kunce is another example of how democrats try to assume the identies of "conservatives" without having the slightest idea of what that means. It's akin to democrats attempt to claim "male/masculine" status when democrats are unfamiliar with the reality of such status, never having actually been "men," but only simulacra without substance. So now we have Kunce and Kinsinger using AR platform rifles to shoot steel targets within fifteen yards (obviously on the pistol range). Note Kinsinger has his glasses perched up on his forehead, so perhaps he was more worried about taking out a few hair follicles instead of his eyes. Not only are they within ricochet/splash-back range, they apparently located "reporters" (another variety of larpers hiding their true identies as propagandists) even closer. It is obvious that none of these people know the first thing about guns, shooting or range safety etiquette. My only regret is that the result was merely a flesh wound., but hope springs eternal. Maybe next time aome democrat wants to fool voters into thinking they are "conservative," they might invite Kamala to come along and put a few downrange with her Glock. I'd actually pay money to see that, although I would never attend in person, fearing the potential for carnage.
