There has never been “free” trade. DJT’s tariff policy is to establish fair trade or another way to say it is reciprocal tariffs. We charge them what they charge us.

Reddog's avatar

Correct. I dearly wish this administration would explain to Americans how our trade with these two counties and others has been so unbalanced for so long. They don’t teach real economics in schools any longer so millions of Americans are clueless.

kam's avatar

It's call Willful Blindness, combined with the World's largest Printing Press, the Federal Reserve and all the U.S. Banks who no longer have any minimum reserve (safety) requirements.

You print money (for nothing) and buy stuff from other countries.

Marlan Hoerer's avatar

Kam labeled it before I could but willfull lazieness also works.

kam's avatar

The US Government used to have bilateral trade. The AutoPact Agreement let Canada make and ship 1 car into the US to match every US made car that shipped into Canada.

But your Government and Corporations pushed for NAFTA, which included the vacuum of Mexico that sucked jobs out of the US. and Canada.

Ask yourself what benefits there were to the average American when the great Factory Migration into China was being promoted? None, Zero.

LuAnn's avatar

Canada's manufacturing was hollowed out due to NAFTA, too. Free trade? Sure, if you want to kill your country's manufacturing sector. All that NAFTA did was move our country's manufacturing offshore -- to China.

kam's avatar

Your sentiment is correct. Facts are, FTA (the Canada/US Free Trade Agreement) was cobbled at US insistence to include Mexico resulting in NAFTA. Ross Perot was right. There was a "Great Sucking Sound" as US jobs AND Canadian jobs went to Mexico.

China was welcomed by US Politicians (think of all the dirty/hot dollars that have been floating the lifestyles of America's New Princes and Princesses) who sell their votes to the Highest Bidder, Domestic or Foreign. China was shoe-horned into the WTO/World Trade Organization, and the Mitt Romney's of the world started scrapping out American Factories, jobs, families including the knowledge base, tax base.

Roaring Chicken's avatar

WalMart started cutting prices and squeezing out smaller competitors and Amazon did it on steroids, frequently by importing Chinese products. Unfortunately, our unions helped to make products made in America more expensive. U S Steel employees with enough years of service could take 13 weeks of vacation (13!) every 5 years or get paid for not taking it (my brother took it, but my Dad took the money). In addition, Japanese cars were better made than domestic cars. And over the years I have been curious to see where and how much of "American" cars were made elsewhere. Tariffs caused Japanese manufacturers to build car factories in the US.

kam's avatar

Everything you write is TRUE.

1. Sam Walton was Buy American. His kids are SELL-OUTS.

2. Private Sector Unions can out-price themselves, killing their futures and their countries futures. That still comes under Government Policy. A Union that can kill your country's Industry needs to be taken out to the Woodshed and introduced to the paddle.

3. Government Unions have grown like Cancer, in the US and Canada. Buying votes with voiceless people's money works until taxes and borrowing drowns everybody on the National Ship. Government Mandarins are being excised in the USA. A good thing.

4. Japan? I still remember when Japan took British Bikes (Norton, Triumph, BSA) back to Japan and, with the examples in their hands, built a better, cheaper bike. I would have preferred the Ego satisfying Harley but that required a fatter wallet. Killing what once was a core British product. The balance between Laissez-Faire capitalism and providing road signs by Government is a difficult dilemma. I prefer less Government.

True (1) there are tariffs. (2) there also are non tariff barriers (3) there are restrictions on capital flows (4) the FX float is not 'clean' over 12trln in FX reserves have been accumulated by country's actions ergo FX values are distorted. (5) China, a command economy a communist economy with state-owned enterprises and a controlled exchange rate dominates international trade (6) the system does not 'work' as it should. The US has 33 straight years YEARS of current account deficits. A CA deficit is supposed to cause the currency to fall to put the CA back into balance...ain't happenin'. Could be because the dollar is the reserve unit AND countries game the system to cheat to preserve competitive advantage in the FX market. Anyway yeah RIGHT. NO FREE TRADE.. Clear Obvious. But hey!! Lets keep it anyway?? <<sarcasm>>I don't see defense of this system. Better to break it and start over. Tariffs will do that. Go tariffs. FY from Bob, an international economist...but they could rescind my PhD for saying this in print.

I have to imagine the Canadian trucker votes and the Christians who’s pastors were threatened if not arrested are being grossly underreported. IOW, those who wish they had Trump for their PM.

LuAnn's avatar

We are now in a situation, as Canadians, similar to the Trump vs Kamala election. We either elect Conservative Pierre Poilievre or we are finished off. Liberal Leader Mark Carney, now installed as prime minister, is a globalist. He is in the same vein as Kamala, Biden, and all the other lefty elitists. And to make it worse, the election is now being positioned, with the support of the MSM in Canada, as a Trump vs Canada election. I am sickened by this.

TeaPartyGal's avatar

That is the MSM's exact objective, to sicken you and make you feel discouraged, and have you just surrender. But I understand, it truly is sickening.

BUT, just because the Left is screaming, does not mean they have the support of the majority. In our US election, I think we were all surprised that Trump's support really was much stronger than we realized. I would bet that is true in Canada, too.

kam's avatar

Again, with respect. Biden was elected because of all the Crime and Criminals that got him across the line.

Too bad there wasn't a documentary about that Election Night. You knew Murdochs/Fox were part of the Crime, "Fox Election Desk declares Arizona for Biden."

LuAnn's avatar

Pray that you are right, TPG.

And another thing- whatever the % is of Canadians that aren’t doing their snowbirding by air (I’d like to know how that number compares to those going by truck & camper), how exactly does that reflect the average Canadian?

I think somebody’s gaslighting! (Who’s zooming who? [Surber can tell us who put that on the charts])

LuAnn's avatar

MSM/pollsters are all in to push the anti-American narrative in our federal election, which is April 28.

kam's avatar

Just as in the USA, in Canada there is a large voting block that gets their money from taxing the working poor. The "Truckers" were the visible face of the real Canadian Opposition and we crushed Trudeau, down to 20% in the polls.

Now, your Bull-in-the-China-shop, by denigrating ALL Canadians, has the WEF (think of a Canadian Biden) puppet at 44%.

ps. Underground Sniper schools are growing like mushrooms in Canada. And no. Justine never got all the guns.

TeaPartyGal's avatar

You can blame it on Trump as a "Bull-in-the-china-shop" if you want, but Trump has only been speaking the economic truth. If Poilievre had been a true leader, he would have chimed in with Trump and used it as a truth-telling forward step for Canada, thereby making the Right stronger in Canada.

LuAnn's avatar

The problem with all Conservatives, or almost all, in Canada is that they are afraid of the media. Sound familiar? They want approval not action. Poilievre needs to start fighting because right now the globalists, elitist, technocratic classes are winning with Mark Carney as their leader. I read LinkedIn and I am appalled at the stupidity and nonsense I hear from many Canadian business leaders. They haven't a clue. It's all anti-American talk and no action. Prayers for Canada.

TeaPartyGal's avatar

Definitely prayers; I commit to praying for Canada.

The media and the Left have big mouths, but remember, that's about all they have--they sure can't point to their performance or success.

LuAnn's avatar

Thanks, TPG. I am very, very wary of globalist Mark Carney. I can't say this enough. He is one of those zero emissions, net zero guys. He will finish killing our oil and gas industry.

Shrugged's avatar

TPG, it's not the WHAT. We love what he's doing. It's the HOW.

MAGA can't afford to lose that little bit that put them over the top.

We could have the best ideas on planet earth but if we lose 2026 it stops dead and will not be allowed to restart.

LuAnn's avatar

Canada was already uncompetitive before the Trump tariffs' threat. Thanks, Justin. Not.

kam's avatar

With respect. In the same way that Media gins up the "Trump is a Russian Asset" to diminish his following... Trump is a Foreigner to Canadians, and Canadians, left, right or center, don't want Foreigners making threats to their country.

Trump tells a lot of Truth. But he is not, ipso facto, the Truth. Nuances are not his strong suit.

The so-called “tariff wars” have brought into sharp relief this signature fact: practically the entirety of world nation’s economies have been largely dependent upon the US being an idiot when it comes to trade.

It began in earnest after WWII as a result of the Marshall Plan, where we took it upon ourselves to help rebuild Europe, the UK, and Japan, and virtually charged them nothing for all our exports.

Ever since, we’ve always ended up with the short end of the stick, and to our own detriment.

Trump is changing that.

While the freeloaders of the free world are now having conniption fits at having to now, how do they always put it? Oh yeah: “pay their fair share”, America is saying “no more free lunch”, while rebuilding itself into a totally self-reliant and independent economic dynamo. Bottom line: they need us more than we need them.

Europe, the UK and all the rest have used our decades of largesse to build their socialist “paradises” but what’s that other famous quote? “Socialism is great until you run out of other people’s money.” (Thatcher).

It’s Time to pay the piper. The bill has come due.

There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

…And then, surrender.

TeaPartyGal's avatar

You nailed it, Suzie.

Chef R.T.'s avatar

“And within 4 years of a Canada First Conservative government, we will build a Canadian economic fortress that will allow us to be strong, self-reliant, stand on our own two feet, and stand up to the Americans.”

So, what you’re saying is that currently, Canada is NONE of those things. And yet, you want to instigate a trade war that will…what? Punish your citizens for the next four years? Do you really believe that the EU will come to the rescue? That is wishful thinking, ya hoser!

Reddog's avatar

Right now there is two much bar room tough talk going on from both sides. How about we sit down with Canada and discuss the issue with the press in the room? It isn’t just Americans who are clueless about what is happening. I still believe we should pull out of NATO before going any farther. Then watch what happens when the EU has to spend their own money to defend themselves. Trump should leak to press that it is being considered seriously.

Epstein Did Not Kill Himself's avatar

Steve (recovering lawyer)'s avatar

Remember that Canada was the place to which many of the American Tories, i.e., those who opposed the Revolution and wished to remain loyal to Great Britain, fled. Despite the passage of time, these loyalist sympathies have never been extinguished. The fact that Canada has always been in America's shadow has fostered resentment among the English speaking parts of the country, particularly as the mother country, England, has been diminished over the years since WW II. As to the population of Quebec, it is French in language as well as disposition, which is to say, it has an inflated idea of its merit and value, but it is entirely dependent on the largesse of the other Provinces for its economic well being. thus making it doubly resentful of America. Canadians with a lick of common sense know that they are dependent on America for nearly everything, and there are those who would actually prefer to abandon Canada and join the USA, particularly in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. As to Mexico, it has always been a thorn in America's side. It has been ruled by one caudillo after another, and is now utterly corrupted by its criminal cartels that are almost indistinguishable from its nominal government. Erecting a wall, both literal and figurative on the southern border would be the best thing for America. We can grow our own avocados. Merely because America shares a border with these countries does not make them our friends or allies; they are our economic and social competitors and should be treated as such. After the Biden/Obama cabal allowed them to grow their economies at the expense of America,Trump is finally recognizing this and acting accordingly. I suspect it will not take too long for things to become rectified. It reminds me of what Tyson said about his opponents who all claimed to have fail-proof strategies before they entered the ring, none of which lasted beyond the first left hook he landed on their faces. Or Clausewicz, who opined that no stragic plan ever lasts beyond first contact with the enemy. Perhaps the tough talk from our northern and southern neighbors' leadership is best summarized by the current meme: "It's a bold strategy Cotton. Let's see if it pays off for him."

Reddog's avatar

If we want to break Mexico, a strong wall will do it. They can’t survive without the US money.

Steve (recovering lawyer)'s avatar

In 2023 the US trade deficit with Canada was $63,000,000,000.00. You want the US to continue to bleed money into Canada, eh hoser? "Free trade" is not something Trump promotes. His goal is to establish fair trade, in which all tariffs, if any, are roughly equal. Correcting trade imbalances is part of Trump's plan to resuscitate America, which includes eliminating corruption in the courts, the government and the social welfare system. Apparently you only get your information from the corporate media.

kam's avatar

With respect. For me personally, keep your $63 billion Federal Reserve Notes. They only create inflation in Canada providing more Tax Revenue for Government Parasites and Lazy Socialists.

Again. Emotion unchecked. Suppositions abound. Just being on Don Surber ought to tell you something about my position on churned out Corporate Media. But that obviously slipped by you.

To your point. Managed, Bilateral Trade is what I believe in. "Free Trade" was a marketing term so US/Global Corporations and their controlled US Politicians could own both ends on either side of (the) borders to profit at the expense of American (and Canadian) workers, families, communities and ultimately, as you are seeing the results now, destruction of the country.

You have a Huge Job in front of you. Let me cheer you on. We ought not be fighting. Mexico, Europe, China are far greater problems than your northern neighbor.

Brian LeMay's avatar

You both have valid arguments but now is the time to clean up both countries . There will be pain for all as the only way this can be fixed is tearing down many institutions and practices . We must eventually come together to repel the evils still to be faced . The productive people in both countries are not the problem . The tariffs are designed to spur innovation , discussion , and negotiation . The elitists fear this greatly and will cheat , lie , and steal to prevent it . United we are stronger but that doesn't mean it's going to be easy .

Dutchmn007's avatar

Trouble with Canada is they seem to have a European mindset & really consider themselves Europeans. Europe as we know is right now in the process of destroying itself over some past, imagined hubris. Western European civilization was probably @ its apogee in the early twentieth century, say around 1905 or so. The crash came in August 1914 & the self-immolation continues right up to this day. Seems they don’t believe in much anymore besides cradle-to-grave welfare states. Their “leaders”/media hound them to hate themselves & make way for the “immigrant” - in reality “invader” - who moves in to soak up welfare $$, breed offspring, & never to assimilate. They come to conquer & usurp.

European passivity in the face of a such civilizational threat is both shocking & unbelievable. But this is the rewards reaped for having too many “weak men & angry women” (to paraphrase a well known comment) in positions of influence.

Reddog's avatar

Politicians lie. Math doesn't. Not only will the tariffs bring a more fair economic balance but maybe Canada will have less money now to bribe the rubes for votes. And Mexico will now need to care for the millions of it's citizens instead of the USA. And the billions of dollars they sent back to Mexico every year will stay here.

Reddog's avatar

I have an old friend in BC. He just laughs and shakes his head at this fued with the US. He told me if it comes down to making a hard choice between Canadas leadership or Mr Trump, the leaders of Canada will find out how few friends they have at home. There are deep resentments there over the way the government treated them this past ten years or so.

LuAnn's avatar

Yes, Justin has bloody well driven Canada into the ground over the last decade. Don't get me started because I am furious at what has happened in my country. When Justin was first elected in 2015, he told the New York Times that Canada is a post-national state with no core identity. How F**king insulting! He has made that happen to us with massive immigration in the last decade. We haven't been able to house or absorb everyone. Many of us are resentful and angry about his reign of error.

TeaPartyGal's avatar

Forgive my lengthy reply, but this brings to mind an experience that I found very illuminating on this topic.

Back during the summer, the US MSM (and polling) was heavily pushing how close the Trump/Kamala election was, and it seemed intimidating, and like it was true. (Of course, we now know they were lying about the polls).

But I had an epiphany when I realized it was operating on me psychologically, to intimidate me on the simple matter of putting out a yard sign for Trump. (I was "justifying" not putting one out, because I lived on a dead-end road without much traffic passing by, but with very vocal Leftist neighbors.)

The Leftists in the neighborhood felt free to loudly, verbally, proclaim their affinity for Kamala and hatred of Trump. There was an implied intimidation in that. Most Trump supporters were invisible and silent. Yes, there were alot of Trump signs in many areas, and very few Kamala signs, but signs of any sort are not usually that prominent--maybe only 10% of homes ever put out a sign.

But when I realized I actually felt an internal intimidation (and I am not a wimp-type of person), I realized it was important for me to BREAK that attempt of the Left to silently mentally manipulate me. So I put out my sign, and emailed some of my neighbors to tell them I didn't mean to be combative, but felt it was very important to support Trump visibly, and why. It led to some productive discussion with some of the liberals.

But above all, I could FEEL an ACTUAL mental OPPRESSION lift off of me. It was remarkable. Yes, this type of thing is subjective, and hard to "scientifically" pin down. But spiritually, it was crystal clear. My small individual act of recognizing and rejecting the mental influence trying to "promote a dismal picture of Trump and his prospects" actually had genuine spiritual power. I felt I was mentally--spiritually-- joining with and mutually strengthening everyone else in the country who felt this way and had decided to not be "oppressed" by the aggressive (? devil-ish?) efforts of the Left to suppress us.

We were collectively taking a spiritual stand, and you could actually FEEL it. It was actually elating. And, this reality about what was good (Trump) ended up being FAR STRONGER in America than any of us even had realized, and Trump won resoundingly (all 7 swing states, the popular vote, etc.).

So, I'm sure that same mental darkness is pressing hard on Canada right now, but that doesn't mean it has power to oppress the good Canadian citizens, and it does not mean the Left is going to win. Spiritual power is an actual thing, and it rests with every earnest Canadian patriot. Spiritual power beats aggressive, noisy evil.

LuAnn's avatar

Rather than kicking the UN out, I'd rather that we sent in a true bulldog (as PM says) as our ambassador to the UN, and have that ambassador LECTURE THE UN CONTINUALLY, just like JD Vance did to the EU in Munich.

We can treat the UN as a platform for relentlessly TEACHING the freedom and MAGA gospel to all the countries at the UN. Let's USE that platform, not throw it away and kick it out.

Greg, I actually think you would be a great bulldog to reside at and PREACH to the UN. Would you be up for a new job? (You recently took up Trump's severance offer for government workers, right? Wouldn't preaching at the UN be a satisfying thing to do? I bet you would be really good at it!)

My genuine sympathies to LuAnn and Chuck. Poilievre had looked like a savior for Canada, but came up very short on this. Maybe there will be a silver lining to this, and it will be the last straw that pushes some Trump-like figure to step forward and become a true Canadian leader.

Point by point Pierre has adopted EXACTLY Trump’s politicing in MAGA. I challenge anyone to show I am wrong. Pierre is saying the exact same things on behalf of “Make Canada Great Again” as Trump has said about America for years. Why is it wrong for Canada to do what we’re doing here?

Pierre’s comments about America are no more critical of us than Trump’s has been for Candians.

Canada today is a socialist failure and I won’t defend it, but Pierre is trying to differentiate himself with the appeal Trump received in America. He’s copying Trump.

If you don’t like what Pierre says about America, it is exactly how Canadians feel about Trump’s comments to them.
