I love England. I love visiting. I love seeing castles and hearing about Kings. But that all pales in comparison to flying into the United States of America, my HOME. A land I love, truly. Cookie, like our country, most of the problems that I have seen on recent visits center around the metropolitan areas. Life in the country is still quite lovely - great pubs, quite good food, beautiful estates, and we have encountered very pleasant, cultured people who are hard working and love their 'old' England like we do the US.
I was in England back in the 80s and enjoyed it. There was actually some good food but one had to seek it out carefully. We stayed in one place that served authentic butterscotch pudding. It was a big dark brown caramelized ball of, I guessed, practically all butter and sugar. That was back in my sugarholic days and it was to swoon...
But for the most part, all the pubs served good curries as part of their Indian conquest heritage. I like spicy, so was happy.

The tragedy is that Britain gave the world many of the civil liberties it now seems eager to trade away for managed decline, speech policing, bureaucratic cowardice, and cultural surrender. America should not sneer at the mother country. We should learn from her. A civilization can build the rule of law over a thousand years and still lose its nerve in one generation. The Anglosphere’s greatness came from liberty under law, private property, moral confidence, and the courage to defend borders, customs, and national memory. When any nation apologizes for its inheritance long enough, hostile ideologies stop asking permission and start writing the terms. America’s duty is to preserve what Britain gave us better than Britain now does.

It seems the creeping sharia in England is a byproduct. The "goal" was population replacement (from the perspective of the elites) and "diversity"/woke/fear of being called racist (from the perspective of the governed. Muslims take advantage of the latter and by the time the people care enough to do anything about it, it's too late.
The same thing is happening here. Look beyond the obvious enclaves in MI and MN; Texas(!) is rapidly being colonized. Florida too. And it's the same pattern: Wokeism and fear of being called "racist" or "islamaphobic", as if that term is anything but a healthy reaction to a primitive "religion" that requires submission or death. The muslims use our own language and laws against us, consolidating their gains while the border is (relatively) closed, waiting for the next surge of millions/year, knowing they will not be sent home.
It's not a good trend.

Every former French, Spanish and most of the former Dutch and Portuguese colonies, now countries, leave a whole lot to be desired. Many are just outright shit places ro exist in.
We do have England to thank for self governance and property rights.
South Africa, a former Dutch colony stolen by the British around 1900, was by far the best, most advanced part of that continent until the American Left insisted on "Rights" so the feral black hordes could start massacring the farmers. Napoleon took power after the French Revolution and he was a very capable and successful general. He and his army defeated every other European power on the battlefield on multiple occasions. Had he avoided invading Russia, Europe would look much different today. He almost beat Wellington later with an army he recruited only weeks and months before at Waterloo. It is most accurate to say that the last country that France defeated was Prussia (Napoleon's last victory). They held their lines for quite a while in WWI until the USA turned the tide of the war. The loss of their best and brightest during that meat-grinder war is what destroyed the future of France.
The historian Paul Johnson made the point that if Napoleon had lived about a century later, he would have been prosecuted for war crimes, like the grandees of the German Nazi regime. Like them and like his predecessor Louis XIV, Napoleon ravaged Europe -- just because he could. But I grant, if he had not invaded Russia, Europe would have been united sooner, and my French would have been better ...
The history books are littered with conquerors who captured territories (resulting in the borders of nations) who would have been prosecuted for war crimes in the 20th century. Napoleon was exiled to the Isle of Elba and later the Island of St. Helena, so he did not go unpunished for his war crimes.

I never reflected upon the dramatic effect that loss of a generation cost the French following World War I. They were everywhere prior to that with their French Foreign Legion, always reputed to be very tough badasses. What you are saying really helps to explain what happened to them.

Britain started to go to hell in a handbasket after WWII when they created the National Health Service; and so began the slide to "life on the dole". This is a very sad end to a great country that once boasted: "The sun never sets on the British Empire".
