KJB was recommended by he ABA? I guess they're not the gold standard we thought they were.

Brad C.'s avatar

The ABA has become dominated by leftist lawyers. I know at least one of them.

Steve (recovering lawyer)'s avatar

It's why I quit that benighted group of thieves, scoundrels and self-aggrandizing, self-important stuffed shirts after a couple of years and never once regretted it for the rest of my forty year legal career.

Brian LeMay's avatar

Unfortunately they fall right in there with labor unions , teacher's unions , NGO's , think tanks , and non-profits . Pay no attention to these odious groups of liars . Money whores all !

Gail W's avatar

Ugh, if that is accurate then both the ABA (and probably the AMA for good measure) should be on the short list for airstrikes when we're done w/ Iran.

They're all enemies - foreign and domestic. 😡

Marlan Hoerer's avatar

Exactly why their reccomendations carry as much weight as a sieve with water.

Here in Kansas, we have a nominating panel which presents a list of potential judges to the governor. Half of them are picked by the Kansas Bar Association and the other half by the governor. Our judicial system is in the toilet. On August 4th we will be voting on a constitutional amendment to elect judges instead.

The only thing I want the bar association to do is mix the drinks, listen to the grips and shut the hell up.

Reddog's avatar

The only problem with voting for judges is the number of people who vote. Too many underestimate or ignore the role of the judiciary in our government. Too many people don’t vote for judges because they don’t understand why they are so important.

Jeremy R's avatar

We've had retention on the ballot for years, we have yet to remove a single judge. I ALWAYS vote to send them packing. When in doubt, throw them out.

Jim Miller's avatar

That's one reason, Reddog. IMO, the biggest issues are they know next to nothing about them, and they land at the end of the ballot which sometimes is very long if there are also ballot measures. Good conservative grass roots GOTV efforts come up with retention (or not) sheets to give out so folks at least have a clue. We do this where I am (AZ) and people appreciate it.

Reddog's avatar

Agreed. I’m just clueless why state GOP party’s don’t do better job of getting voters information out to them. Cheap to do but pays big results.

Jim Miller's avatar

I can't comment on your state, but here in AZ the State Party is essentially worthless to the grassroots effort. So is the Maricopa County GOP, as the county is bigger than most of the states. Most of their energy seems to be directed at making their next power move, not at how to support the local legislative districts effectively. So the key is the local LD leadership and volunteer force. That is where we won here in 2024 and that's how future elections have to be fought. The Dems have worthless state and national committees too, but what they have and we do not are the billionaire lefty donors like Singham and Soros, to name two of several. That allows all those NGOs to pay their foot soldiers and on our side, only two do, Turning Point Action and American Majority Action. 90% of the effort is done by old retired people who still believe they can make a difference.

Jeremy R's avatar

We try, but you have to get people to read their mail

Sheila Barkofske's avatar

Thanks for the backup info, Jeremy (I live in purple OVPK area). For a variety of reasons had loss touch with the conservative base & while walking my dog one day happened by a house that had a NO sign in it. Not only was this before the 30 day mark, but it was at a house that normally had signs for progressive candidates, so that was my first warning. I looked up the amendment & eventually came to the YES position. Like Shakespeare, don’t trust lawyers & or bureaucrats, but the main reason was that having been away this area for decades upon returning & getting involved, I learned that Johnson County had, years earlier, voted to appoint vs elect the county appraiser, which was a bad choice for the voters because the appraiser was now only responsible to the bureaucracy aka county commissioner wanting to raise taxes. I agree with others, it requires an informed electorate which is too often oxymoronic, but even still voters are not giving away their only leverage.

Jeremy R's avatar

I'm not a big fan of electing judges, BUT what we have now is a disaster. Even when we've had Republican governors, the judicial submissions were somewhere between KBJ and horizontal Harris material.

Retirednottired's avatar

Voting for judges turns them into politicians. Subject to the same pressures and corruptions as all the rest of the elected crooks.

Jeremy R's avatar

I agree, but what we have now is terrible. All we get are KBJ material, communists and corrupt.

All judges below SCotUS should be term limited, and No Retirement!

Retirednottired's avatar

Everybody in govt, elected or not, should be limited, even clerks and bureaucrats. And NO Govt unions!

Tom's avatar

The ABA and its state cousins haven't been the gold standard for decades.

Jeremy R's avatar

The gold standard was eliminated by Roosevelt and given the coup de grace by Nixon in 1971. Today we have fiat currency and a fiat legal system to go with it.

Wim de Vriend's avatar

The tinselgold standard.

Mike Ware's avatar

Right, and the feckless hypocrite voted for her. Sorry, not sorry, I’m glad he got to meet his Maker.

Playswithneedles's avatar

I’m old enough to remember when people serving in congress believed that presidents had the right to their choices for cabinet members, judges, etc. Graham believed that too. For the left, those days are long gone unless the president is their guy.

I’d rather have someone like Graham representing me than the likes of Schumer and company, who are willing to stoop to any low to grab for more power for themselves. They have shown themselves to be utterly devoid of honor, integrity and morality. Never forget - they were all in on Senator Graham Platner.

Jake's avatar

Nick Shirley recently exposed the fraud in Queens run by the Korean Mob et al. Seems like the Democrats and the DSA, but I repeat myself, are all in on the take. Is there any difference between what we call the Mob and the DSA/Dem party? Asking for a friend.....

Jeremy R's avatar

Graham was a politician. He knew how to negotiate and kept his end of the deal nearly every time. When he didn't, it was because the other party played cut throat first.

He wasn't my favorite senator but he was better than most of them. Make that nearly all of them.

As for KBJ, yup, she's bad, and a perfect person to showcase why the current donk party needs to be kept as far from power as possible.

She needs to be the focus in every article about the SCotUS decisions to remind everyone what colossal stupidity we would face if the Democrats get close to power.

Wim de Vriend's avatar

But -- but -- can she pass for a woman without the endorsement of a Nobel-Prize winning biologist???

Jeremy R's avatar

Can she pass for human without the endorsement of a Nobel-Prize winning biologist???

Wim de Vriend's avatar

With or without, I have my doubt. And at least that rhymes.

Scott L's avatar

Wish I knew how to create a poll. Whom would you vote for if the candidates were: A. Moochelle Obama; B. Kamalalala; C. KJB? I would point out that all 3 were DEI graduates of college and law school. I would also point out that any of the 3 would be the least qualified member of the Court.

Dennis Howell's avatar

The ABA has become steadily more liberal the last few years.

Dindu Nuffin's avatar

Good morning y'all. Whatever else Lindsey Graham was, he was a human being. May he rest in peace

Don Reed's avatar

07/13/26: I quite agree. And I'm glad I was lucky enough to see the L.G. video when he said what Don Surber has transcribed (Don, if you have time, add annotations in brackets so that it is clear when L.G. was speaking to Kavanaugh; when L.G. shifted gears and addressed Schumer; and then when he addressed his colleagues as a body. Thank you).

Playswithneedles's avatar

Graham was one of my senators. I didn’t always agree with him but he did stand tall on occasion. Here’s another example…

Graham was the impeachment manager and one of the attorneys for the Republicans during Clinton’s impeachment trial in the senate. He was almost the only member of congress who bothered to read all of the evidence against Clinton. It was available to all of them. Hundreds of pages. He was disgusted and outraged by what he read and he made no bones about it. His reactions and statements about Clinton during that trial were on par with those he made about the democrats during the Kavanaugh hearings.

Love him or not, he had an unwavering sense of right and wrong. Something sorely missing from the left these days.

James Mead's avatar

I've been torn about Graham since his days as a congressman. One day he's super man the conservative. The next he's spending money on Ukraine like no tomorrow.

That said he was a decent man. Taking care of a younger sibling is admirable.

Jake's avatar

I've got mixed feelings about the Ukraine deal. As an old military guy I'm impressed with the tenacity and imagination the Ukrainians have used to blunt the Ruskies. Revolution in Military Affairs (RMA) is a big deal for the Military Industrial Complex. I'm sure Pete is all over it but it takes time to remodel and retrain forces. Maybe Lindsey knew something we didn't. Even with all the stealing and graft, it might turn out to be a better investment than Snap and Medicare for all.

Marlan Hoerer's avatar

He was not a very d grifter or spent too much money if he was only worth $3 million. jmho

Wim de Vriend's avatar

Because I know a fair amount of Ukraine's tragic history, I've been for them all along. It's my only difference with Trump, but he seems to be coming around.

And those who keep shouting "corruption, corruption!!!" about Ukraine should be asked if the USA is free of it. If their answer is yes, ask them to invest in a LEARING CENTER.

Brian LeMay's avatar

I am not taking sides in this war ; but really poor judgment on both sides is alarming . Multiple bio labs on Ukrainian soil and Russia's bombing of nuclear power plants tends to distance any support for either side .

James Mead's avatar

Our country is not as pure as the driven snow. The situation with Russia and surrounding countries is a cluster. But it's a cluster because we promised Ukraine and we broke our word. Lots of ethnic issues over there.

As far as I'm concerned Russia hasn't attacked a nato member and they are playing FAFO with Russia.

The USA doesn't need to be in a proxy war with Russia.

Jeremy R's avatar

I watched a video last week about the reasons behind the Ukraine war.. it's a distraction to keep people from noticing the wholesale robbery being committed by the oligarchs who run things in Russia. Putin gets his share for sure and the fighting serves to keep them from noticing that they are being robbed.

https://youtu.be/dlF0ZzH6C9s?is=nS-nsIu_7EmpwyOt

Reddog's avatar

Nothing new in Russia. The people just don’t care anymore.

Playswithneedles's avatar

Not sure if the people don’t care. Probably more like they are powerless to do anything about it. But you’re right about nothing new - it used to be the communist party honchos and now it’s the oligarchs.

Reddog's avatar

At some level they care but when you look at the number of decades upon decades they have been controlled, they see no way out. Warning for all the lefty lovers out there, heed history before it happens to you.

Its a big deal here😎 Yep let us know what works for you and the best way to coordinate.

And just now it appears that his sister will serve in his stead until Jan. She said, “He was always there for me so I will be there for him”. Class act. Interestingly, she has served on a Commission for the Blind so she does have some public service experience as well.

Albert P. Sweeney's avatar

The fact that he died with only $3MM in his estate shows he was more of a servant than a professional grifter. I compare him to Pelosi, Schumer, Bernie and the fake Injun and he appears to be a pauper among the other government officials we have.

I did not know about his parents but I do know he grew up poor.

I pray for him to rise to the glory of Heaven.

I pray for his family. He was not my favorite politician but he was certainly not the bottom of the barrel like Al “the Ape” Green, Maxine “Am I still alive” Waters, “I love Graham Planter” Warren, or Jazzy “Just call me Ghetto” Crockett.

May GOD Almighty bless his family with Peace, continue to bless and protect President Donald J. Trump and these United States of America!!

I actually chose Dabo Sweeney, as replacing Graham is no laughing matter. The war is not Republican versus Democrat; it is good versus evil. Dabo is a Christian and isn't ashamed of it - in public, in school, or in front of the press. When teaching wasn't indoctrination, there was a big banner in our cafeteria over the stage that was at one end of the large multipurpose room - "Doing what's right isn't always easy, but it's always right." Truth in 10 words. Graham wasn't a saint. None of us are. But if you try to do RIGHT, you should be in a position to make a difference by doing so. God bless the United States of America.

Albert P. Sweeney's avatar

Good choice John. I chose Dabo as well.

steph_gray's avatar

Did not know his name until now. Thanks to Don and you other two gentlemen for the scoop.

The name will be hard to cement in my head. It will probably occupy the single cell already devoted to Dabney Coleman. Not much room in there.

Playswithneedles's avatar

Maybe it would be easier if you connected it to Sidney Sweeney!

steph_gray's avatar

😆 Would have if male, but I’m female.

And no Dabney is not a hot guy. Just memorable for good comedy.

Graham was complicated, and pretending otherwise is dishonest. Give him credit: without his Kavanaugh moment, the Supreme Court might look very different today. He had the guts to say what weak Republicans were afraid to say while Democrats tried to destroy a nominee with a collapsing story and no fair process. That was real courage. But courage in one chapter does not erase betrayal in another. After January 6, Graham told Michael Fanone that officers should have shot rioters “in the head,” and reports also describe him warning Trump that enough Republicans might support removal unless Trump conceded. That was not MAGA loyalty. That was panic, Beltway instinct, and contempt for citizens swept into the J6 meat grinder. So mark the record straight: Graham helped save the Court. He also helped legitimize some of the worst post-January 6 hysteria. Both are true.

Shrugged's avatar

"That was not MAGA loyalty."

Agree 100%. I saw loyalty to those who had power and money. Perhaps his family/life story helps us understand why that is. Along the way, he had the opportunity to make some good decisions too, but he was more RINO than MAGA, IMO. His liberty voting score is 43%, an "F". I could NEVER understand why Trump kept endorsing him, especially when there was a bright, capable candidate who was MAGA through-and-through.

With this chance to make a change, we can further buffer the resistance in the Senate. Maybe?

TeaPartyGal's avatar

Yes-- this is a great opportunity to strengthen the Senate.

Cookie McCall's avatar

I wonder who the great candidate is that Trump has in mind

m&m's avatar

I live in SC. Not a lot of MAGA candidates here which is surprising for a Red state.

Shrugged's avatar

I guess that explains Nikki Haley's acceptance there.

RevMikeyMac's avatar

i can’t forget Lindsay “Grahamnesty”, which after doing a search for the word I see that Rush gave him that name. All that Gang of Eight business surely helped get us to where we are today with illegal immigrants killing citizens, voter fraud, and sex trafficking. The word search also turned up an interesting website on him: grahamwatchdog.com

Playswithneedles's avatar

The Poll. Nancy Mace? Really? She’s a nut job. I live in SC. She came in dead last in the recent primary for governor. No one here likes or wants her.

Shrugged's avatar

Agree. A rudderless boat with no redeeming personality traits. She leverages her sex appeal (which kills it, IMO) and is an empty vessel.

GaryC9's avatar

Yup, she is a nut job who occasionally appears to be sane. She’d be another Lisa Murkowski.

steph_gray's avatar

Worse - she might turn out another MTG.

Jake's avatar

There's not a Democrat chance in hell that the Trumpster will support Mace.

Joe LaGreca's avatar

Once she jumped on the Epstein train with Massie & MTG, she was done.

Vince Gallo's avatar

Yeah but I can think of two things about her I like. lol 😂

banckersen's avatar

Graham got a lot better once he got out from under John McCain's shadow.

Shrugged's avatar

Poll: "Keep Graham and hope no one notices"

The Dems did it with Biden for Four years so we have at least that long to hold him. Can the Senate use an autopen for signing bills? There's probably one in storage from a few years ago . . .

Leonard Wechsler's avatar

A class guy. A lot of folks didn't notice because he was a gentleman and didn't make crazy statements or throw false charges around. Of course, the party of classless warfare can not understand things like that.

There is an old phrase "pearls before swine" and if Graham was not always perfect the sleazebags who demean him simply demonstrate that deep down their criticisms really are 'oink-oink' noises.

Tmitsss's avatar

Graham died from an Aortic Aneurism (I have a family history so I have been screened, something everyone should consider)

Jake's avatar

We in our seventies have to be ready to go at any time. Not the Rapture, just life. I should probably quit smoking cigars.....

Tmitsss's avatar

I fear the rupture more than the rapture

Vince Gallo's avatar

Uh oh! Out comes my rosary.

Wim de Vriend's avatar

Tobacco is mentioned as a risk factor. Consider also what it did to Limbaugh ...

Tmitsss's avatar

My paternal grandfather died suddenly. The was in 1952. The Death Certificate says stroke, but I think there is a strong possibility of a dissected Aortic aneurysm

Liberty Belle's avatar

A relative of my SIL lost her husband to this. The two children were screened and one had it. He underwent surgery to fix it. So I wonder if surgery was not an option for Graham. Hannity says Graham knew he had it. Did his doctor not tell him how he might feel bad if it was about to rupture and when to go to the ER if he did?

Tmitsss's avatar

My Dad had this and was one of the earliest to have it treated with a stent sent through a vein in his leg. (I am not a good source for accurate treatment advice )

Liberty Belle's avatar

How long ago was that? It’s said Graham’s dad died of a massive heart attack. Hubby says it was probably an aortic dissection, too, but they didn’t know about such things back then.

Vince Gallo's avatar

RIP Lindsey Graham. Go with God.

🙏✝️❤️

Dennis's avatar

Always a gentleman. Far more than can be said of many in D. C.

Cookie McCall's avatar

I read Graham's statements previously of the horrid Kavanaugh hearing in addition to having listened to the hearing in real time. Thank goodness we have Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court as a reliable conservative vote. Thank you, Lindsey Graham for that even though there were times I didn't agree with your stance, you were definitely a true supporter when it came to Ukraine and that mess until virtually your dying breath

Playswithneedles's avatar

Not so sure that he’s a reliable conservative. But he’s a much better person than I am because he rules according to the law. If the demonicrats had done to me what they did to him, I would have thrown impartiality to the wind and ruled against the left every single time.

Liberty Belle's avatar

That’s the difference between fair-minded, constitutional-observing citizens and revolutionaries. At this point, I’m not sure but that we need to be somewhat “revolutionary” as you would be to bring about an effective course correction.

Vince Gallo's avatar

Don you’re absolutely right. Lindsey was a profile in courage when it mattered most. The Kavanaugh hearing was a crucial turning point for us. He held the line and pushed back the foe enough to secure Justice Kavanaugh’s appointment to SCOTUS.

We both lived through the reign of terror of the Court that gave us Roe v Wade and a ton of other activist decisions that in many respects destroyed the American we grew up in.

Lindsey’s heroic defense of Justice Kavanaugh led the way for a right turn for SCOTUS.

I’ll always be thankful for that.

🙏🇺🇸
