“Congress has borrowed $22 trillion since the last recession ended. The pandemic accounted for about $5 trillion of that.”

Didn’t we just have a recession about 3 years ago, but the media changed the definition of the word “recession” so they didn’t have to report on it?

James Wills's avatar

If memory serves, the origin of "recession" and "depression" relates to the Great Depression of the 'thirties. Depression meant that the economy was depressed - a little sag; recession meant it actually went backward, i.e., receded, so a recession was the worse. My understanding is that to avoid panic, the catastrophe of the 'thirties was officially called a "depression" so as not to panic the public. (How'd that work for ya?)

Nowadays that reversal in definition has stuck. A depression is unthinkable, so we call a little dip in the economy a "recession."

Playswithneedles's avatar

Yes, but IIRC, the definition of recession has been 3 consecutive quarters of negative growth and, when that happened under Pedo Joe, they all said, “Oh, no! That’s not the true definition of a recession.”

Jim's avatar

Yes, the middle two quarters in 2022 both had negative GDP, thus a recession. But everyone worked very hard to avoid saying so. And why did we have it. Because FJB lit a bomb of inflation off, and Powell at the Fed after being a good soldier, finally said enough and began raising rates in March of that year. Oh, our economy was so robust say the defenders of the last administration. But that event threw the economy into a recession. Seems pretty impossible if the experts were right.

Experts are mostly wrong, they just say whatever they are being paid to say.

Greg's avatar

Powell is not a "good" soldier. The DS has something on him: if not a disreputable act; they just threaten to kill your daughter.

Jim's avatar

Eh - he broke with FBJ pretty early by raising rates. So I think he was, as a Fed chair, trying to do the right thing. His big issue now is that the fed funds rate is whacking the federal budget - yet the economy is not soft - it may actually be strengthening a bit, even in the face of tariffs which could have a recessionary impact. Can you lower rates in front of a strengthening economy?

It’s gonna be a long month.

Longer with the DOGE cuts going to Congress to be codified. If it fails, we should audit every one of the Congress Grifters.

re: Musk and the Failing New York Times. This is the perfect time for a $100B lawsuit. Since he is the CEO of multiple huuuuuuuge companies, defaming him would potentially lead to incalculable loss in revenue and stock value. The Dim-o-crats have perfected the lawfare petard; now is the time to give their flagship a little dose of it.

Making the irrelevant “news” and the relevant nothing is the formula the lame stream media uses.

The Babylon Bee puts out “news” that has more basis in fact than does the lame stream outfits.

LuAnn's avatar

The Bee's news has a strange way of coming true!

TeaPartyGal's avatar

It is always rather bizarre, when I've been reading the Babylon Bee for 10 minutes and then switch back to the "regular" news, it feels like I'm still reading the Babylon Bee.

We are at the 'beginning' of "Mess Fixing" started by long sitting NGO's and a long list of worthless presidents going back to just after Reagan. Rome is being repaired at warp speed and nobody seems to understand that but the American loving people - who have finally stood up in enough mass to yell, "The emperor had no clothes!" at FJB, BHO, the Bushes, certainly mafia Bill and Hillary, and their minions. I am probably at the head of the "No Patience" line, but I continue to remain amazed, hopeful, and PATIENT that the man in charge and the God in charge of him will make a real and meaningful change for the better to the greatest nation, so far, on the face of the earth.

FJBAP. Hahahaha! Brilliant!

Greg's avatar

I don’t listen. I haven’t listen to lame stream media for decades. It’s all lies for ratings. Yes. But the CIA has dirt on everyone in media. Epstein pictures. Drug use in college. A shameful medical procedure. . . Anything to shame or cajole or outright extort into doing what the deep state wants. Governments are dangers. They ALWAYS become tyrannies.

Laurie's avatar

They also have dirt on congressman, senators, judges etc. It must eat them alive they could find nothing on Trump.

Greg's avatar

That’s why they are trying to kill him. He’s uncontrollable.

Reddog's avatar

Have you noticed Trump leaves them alone? Trump knows full well who is behind most of this deep state corruption. But he hasn’t hardly mentioned them. Why?

Reddog's avatar

CIA is not our friend. Our entire government is afraid of them. Time to dismantle them before we have WWIII.

Greg's avatar

We are already in the first stage of WWIII. Propaganda and positioning. Low level violence without punishment. This leads to more division and violence.

Reddog's avatar

Yes, the war has been in progress for quite some time. The CIA must be reigned in. They are far outside the scope of their original model. You cannot have a government agency with little oversight and a black budget. These people have shown they are capable of starting a war multiple times. There isnt one member of congress who fully understands what they are doing and everyone is afraid to take them on. This is a waiting disaster for this country if we don’t remodel them.

Greg's avatar

The biggest problem we have are judges . . . Or lack thereof. We don’t hold people accountable for their bad behavior. Just see the video of the NAVSEC stage being rushed by pro-Palestine protesters. I don’t deny them the right to protest. But not in that setting. They should go to jail for 30 days for that. But no one will actually charge, try and convict.

Greg's avatar

Our judicial system is/was designed to alleviate societal pressure for revenge by formalizing and adjudicating disputes peacefully. People are going to start taking this into their own hands if the judges refuse to distribute justice.

revmaddog1948's avatar

Judges and judgment were the most important thing to a volunteer society, according to the prophets before the King David or actually King Saul. Israel wanted a standing army and pestered Samuel who actually refused until God gave him permission to give in because he wanted a big object lesson for society. This is why I am in a cave and not allowed in the public very much because I know exactly what to say to destroy somebody but I have to stay quiet so much that I have to be restrained. God has done it through this lymphedema which is a mild affliction and then he chose to fill my life with joy still and continuing so that every so often if I'm around the right friend which I can only do on the internet thank God I will roar with laughter and my latest young girlfriend, she's 41 and I'm 77 worries at the neighbors will complain but I've been checking and so far there's been no complaints. And now you know why they call me MAD DOG.

CBS News CEO Resigns Amidst President Trump’s Lawsuit and Falling Ratings

DJT accused the network of meddling in the election. A compensation amount of $100 million to $150 million has been proposed by Trump's legal team; this amount would surpass recent defamation settlements from other media behemoths. And pay they have. Fox, Dominion reach $787M settlement over election claims. Is there no one in MSM to say no mas', let's report the truth for a while'?

Reddog's avatar

Begs the question, “then why not”? Who is really pulling the strings then?

PM's avatar

4 or 5- Vanguard Blackrock, State Street. and a couple of others. They control just about all the media. As darrell said. You don't think Bud's dumb enough to use a tranny to sell their beer??

DeniseVB's avatar

Today's poll was harrrrrd. :) It just made me think of the E.Jean Carroll "rape" case from over 30 years ago and the millions in settlement for defamation because Trump said she wasn't his type? That was the most media malpractice I've seen in my life (and I've been alive since Truman, grasshoppers). It made me think of Clinton and his many, many side chicks since his Governor days. Ask Juanita Broadrick's black eye :) Phftttt, nobody cared, it was between him and Hillary.

Today's media is a second generation from Woodward and Bernstein who killed Journalism. (You know they did NO investigation, some schmuck handed it to them and fessed up on his death bed) But the J-Schools have been turning out social justice warriors ever since. None have intellectual curiosity, know how to write, have no clue what the 5 W's are, the AP Guidance Book is their Bible/Commie Manifesto/Koran. At this rate, X is going to kill them off forever. It's too bad, I still love holding a newspaper, but have you read one recently? My local, Virginian-Pilot/Norfolk, is now a mini-WaPo, literally and figuratively, all WaPo/AP bylines and no copy editors. It's costing us $114 for daily delivery for 13 weeks. Bring back the Paper Boys! At least we're investing in hard work and perseverance. ( I lasted one week delivering WaPo in 8th grade, I sure didn't break glass ceilings, lol)

Epoch Times is the only one I desire and my current finances are so tight that I can barely afford spoiling my girlfriend with a bag of dried ginger sugared for $15 once a month. No I'm not desperate and I'm not complaining but until then why main source of news my main source of news is still Don, x, truth social, and one or two exits X accounts that are even well one is like she says on X more accurate than done Don. The statistics are 100% for like she says on X and 99.99% for Don. I may have to add some more nines to that to get the accurate number. And yes she's 100% and so am I. And yes, sometimes I ace the test plural. But I have severe restraints. Even though my stock recommendations are so far 100% accurate, I can't even bet a diet Coke well I did once and one one won.

I took a couple journalism courses in college, back in the dark ages (late 60s-early 70s). I had ideas of being a writer. But when I compared what I was learning with what I actually saw in print, the idea grew cold quickly. I was learning the 5 W's, but all I saw in print was advocacy.

BTW, I have not read newspapers for a looong time, but I happened to notice today as I passed a newsstand in the supermarket, the price of the local daily: $3.50 per DAY. When I last read them, that number would get you the entire WEEK of papers.

Wim de Vriend's avatar

"$114 for daily delivery for 13 weeks"???? How in this universe can it be worth that?

DeniseVB's avatar

It’s not. The local Pennysaver has more useful information.

Shrugged's avatar

I hope you are correct but the MSM is still able to swing an election - especially when the candidate is NOT Trump. They helped a lot with down-ticket races even in 2024.

With the power and influence of AI on the 'brains of mush' who still listen to them, I won't say they are circling the drain just yet. The whirlpool is forming, but they are holding tight today, and the real influence of AI is yet to be assessed.

I sense the country is in the same whirlpool.
