For a while, I thought that caucasians weren’t allowed in commercials.

Skinnydip's avatar

They are now. But they must be dating or married to a different race.

James Wills's avatar

Beat me to it. I think a lot of people are thinking the same thing.

I knew a stunning black girl several years back - engineering student, and not just pretty, but brilliant. She asked my advice about trying to date another (white) college student. Considerably older and more experienced than she, I told her that she was opening up a whole can of misery for herself; I had seen it many times.

"The black guys don't like me."

"God, why not? You're not only beautiful, you're really smart!"

"I'm too skinny. I don't have a big enough butt."

God. Stupidity. That's why men don't live as long as women. Stupidity.

PM's avatar

Not sure about the misery. 🎵 If you're gonna be my baby, it don't matter if you're black or white.💗. Content of character, doncha know?

James Wills's avatar

It doesn't - and shouldn't - matter to the couple, but like it or not they live in a world filled with Other People.

It's hard enough for a couple to make it as it is, without loading themselves with more burdens. As a group, I'd say do whatever your heart desires. Advising an individual, a friend and colleague, I'd say Think About It Carefully.

PM's avatar

Good point. Thankfully, I live in a sheltered environment.🎵 A land of Bluebirds and fountains, no wrath to incur. And cling to an Angel that looks like her.🙏

Marlan Hoerer's avatar

How true and in many if there are more than 5 one or two must be gay .

Retirednottired's avatar

Sorry, your proportions are way off. 1 in 5 is 20%. There is no way on earth that 20% of men are gay. Studies always place the number around 4-5%, TOPS. Don't give the gay mafia more ammunition than they deserve.

Forbes's avatar

MH's comment is pointing out the overrepresentation of gays in advertisements and programming on TV--not the actual numbers, as you've denoted. Cheers.

Indeed! Jane Austin had not finished her novel, Sanditon when death overtook her. As a fan I was interested to see how hired writers would complete it for TV. I guarantee that Jane would never have had two of her male characters end the story coming out, declaring their love for one another. PBS (or the BBC?) thought otherwise. It ruined an otherwise enjoyable story, true to the manners, etiquette, fashion and culture of the era. Oh, and there was a black heiress which didn’t make any difference to the plot so not a biggie except for the PC necessity.

donald b welch's avatar

..and be willing to exclusively play the bad guy. that's an important construct that sometimes gets left out of the discussion.

Why I mute all commercials and go into the kitchen to see what I can eat or drink. Also my corporate boycott list is getting longer by the day IF by chance I spot one of those asinine commercials. Bring back Ozzie and Harriet, or even Dagwood and Blondie. Even Phil Harris and Alice Faye, how many of you are old enough to know them? lol

In films and TV Series too there must be one or more POC to justify the production. Better yet is a mixed (2nd marriages) family with a happily mixed race couple. My mute button is almost worn out and tolerance for this stupidity is nil. The most odious for me though was the black cast of Hamilton. Yes, actors of all colors can be persuasive but perverting history is not necessary. The leftist audiences swooning over the ‘masterpiece’ was gag inducing for me. Naturally the jokes came with it…”What’s next a black Jackie?” Whoops, already happened…they claimed that title for Michelle the Mooch. Whatever happened to ‘Black is Beautiful’?

Electing a mixed race President obviously didn’t work to elevate POC bc it became clear right away that it was fraud perpetuated by the deep state to destroy the Republic.

Though it did take a while for some to catch up, now you don’t hear anything about Barack being the greatest anything.

Joe LaGreca's avatar

They are, but they have to play the role of stupid ignorant dummies.

James Wills's avatar

They are, but only as part of a mixed-race couple.

We are in the commercial, but on the non-viewing side of the camera.

We're the ones who pick up the bill for it all to enrage white guilt and build a consumer segment for the brand.

Let's just ignore David French, the conscienceless excremental human being who resembles a bipedal circumsized penis.

And yes, Dylan Mulvaney doesn't look anything like a girl. He looks like a character from a grotesque nightmare. Consider that scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark where the Nazi opens the Ark, and a beautiful ghostly woman emerges, but then the woman turns into a macabre monstrous demon who proceeds to kill everyone in the room who looks at her.

In similar fashion, in this grotesque nightmare, lovely woman Audrey Hepburn morphs into horrid tranny Dylan Mulvaney, who cackles and vamps to our collective horror and disgust. We grope blindly for the eyebleach.

The horror.

Joe LaGreca's avatar

Ignore French & the rest of the "conservative gatekeepers (as Rush liked to call them) that were or still are at National Review. Lucianne Goldberg would be doing backflips if she saw what her son Jonah has turned into. Trump truly broke these folks,

Shoveltusker's avatar

Yeah--Jonah is the most puzzling. I used to really enjoy his writing. He kind of did a Howard Stern. Stern is even harder to understand, bc he was very wealthy and didn't need to become a throne-sniffer.

We can never know another man's heart, but I suspect Jonah decided that he preferred the security of a throne-sniffing posture, figuring that was a niche that would assure him of a secure position in media.

If so, that's the height of cynicism and cowardice.

Don Reed's avatar

09/03/25: At some point in Stern's life, money was no longer money because he had so much of it --- it became merely "pieces of paper." Meanwhile, he had no morals at the start, and he has none at the end, which is the perfect playbook for becoming one of the cloned and corrupt b*stards that, earlier in his life, he had made millions of dollars viciously mocking.

Retirednottired's avatar

I have never understood why any person would ever want to watch or listen to Howard Stern.

Don Reed's avatar

09/03/25: I had had, at one time, a very good reason. I got fired from NBC in 1984. When he got fired from NBC Radio in 1985, about a week later, he had a new job and in the fall of 1985, it was a delight to hear him curse out our former employer. Of course, that was 40 years ago, long before his wit evaporated and he turned into the Deep State Snake of New York State.

Laurie's avatar

My theory is gay people won the war when they got the ability to marry. Then activists, never content to take the win, came up with a new idea, trans! Viola! Years of outrage, which was always the point.

TeaPartyGal's avatar

Same as with feminism. A whole layer of people had made their living off early feminism; when it succeeded in the most important areas, they had to drum up other "pseudo-feminist" issues in order to give themselves a salary.

May have been the same with "environmentalism". You never even heard the word until the 70's. But once the overall population became generally appreciative of basic environmental ideas, that whole cadre of activists had to keep the money flowing by branching out into further, fringe areas, like global cooling, then global warming, now, "climate change".

One might say the scourge of America today is the legions of "professional activists".

TeaPartyGal's avatar

And don't even get me started on the gigantic number of people currently making their living from "combating racism'. This has been very lucrative for them, and very destructive to their work ethic, because it has been a job that requires really nothing but a big mouth and a propensity for pontificating.

a few years ago i took some friends to my old neighborhood where i grew up in the north end of flint,mi. as we passed my old house a teenage kid on the sidewalk started yelling and pointing at our car: "white folk in da neighborhood. white folk in da neighborhood". we scooted along with haste.

Ann Fairbank's avatar

After the divorce, in which he took my side, my former and younger BIL, took me on the Gray Line Bus tour of Broadway in SF. Still closeted living with his mom in the San Joaquin Valley at the time he could safely count on me to go to movies (Auntie Mama, Some Like it Hot), Phyllis Diller performances, etc. After I moved with children to the East Bay to live at home until I could get my financial bearings he would drive over from the valley and we’d go to The City. The Gray Line Bus tour also had a stop at Finicchio’s the famous cross dressing nightclub (since the 30’s) where the MC was ‘Lucian, the last of the Red Hot Papa’s’, a Sophie Tucker impersonator…The performers were extremely sophisticated and talented and it was hard to believe they were men. SF was a lot of fun with up and coming stand up clubs, The Hungary Eye, The Purple Onion and where comics like Phyllis, The Smother’s Brothers, Mort Sahl, and Shelly Berman became well known. But then topless came in with peep shows and feigned sex on stage and the fun was over. A few years later my ex MIL was killed in a tragic car accident and of course I went to console my friend who then took the opportunity to ‘come out’ to me by introducing his new BF. I said “Well, Duh. Do you really think I have been oblivious all this time?” But in the late 50’s and early 60’s you didn’t talk abt those things. Just pretended. Years later I was there again for his memorial. No details but a very ignoble ending.

VICKI's avatar

In my high school days, being a "queer" was only speculated or as one of my classmates told me when we were adults and was very ashamed: his son was a limp wrist. Well kids, all that is now in the open and there is nothing gay about it to me. Have you ever seen a man in a dress with a purse and lipstick but still sporting a mustache? Go to major homo cities and your will see things you can't believe. How about the ads for hiv meds with men kissing on commercials? Yeeks! Why do people feel they need to advertise everything about themselves? I wasn't raised that way so find it a bit uncomfortable. Keep your private life private.

Wim de Vriend's avatar

Good one, Steve. About never shutting up.

Lawsy0's avatar

That is the exact phrase my mother used when speaking of the 2 ladies who lived on our block back in the late 40's, early 50's.

donald b welch's avatar

remember when we all said that a tv channel created for gays would never make it?

Steve (recovering lawyer)'s avatar

Precisely! These "men" who want to become "women" are merely homosexual who don't want to admit it. Being sexually penetrated by a man is a woman's function as part of the reproductive cycle, so when a homosexual adopts the female role, it is only a short step to "becoming" a woman. Voila! Problem solved; no more shame.

One of the most astounding occurrences about the arrival of DJT onto the political scene in 2015 and since, was - and is still - the unmasking of the faux “conservatives” who all had held sway over the Republican Party for decades.

Throughout all those years they had positioned themselves as the “opposition” to the Democrats policies and made endless promises to fight against those policies regarding energy, school choice, reckless spending, nationalized healthcare, etc. etc. and yet- never, ever managed to accomplish any of it. But they would “fight on!” they always promised!

Trump exposed every last one of them, the David French’s, the whole National Review gang, like Goldberg and Lowry, the Paul Ryan’s and Kevin McCarthy’s, the John McCain’s and Lyndsey Graham’s. They have all been frauds, liars, opportunists of the most vile order, fleecing their constituency and selling their souls for a seat at the table with the wealthy and powerful.

They only ever had pride instead of principles, and they are now revealed to be the lying, phony and corrupt hypocrites they always were.

With regards to the poll ... I don't think anything Bud Light does will regain it's market share. They FAFO real good!

Shrugged's avatar

Certainly the brand name of Bud Light rightfully took the hit it received, but it was the corporate entity Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev), who purchased the Budweiser brand in 2008, behind the ad campaign. It is based in Belgium. I'm not sure the Busch family (St. Louis, MO) had much influence over the Mulvaney failure. Not that it matters, except to remind all that it was another EU leftist management vision that enabled it. The Busch's got their money and will suffer the adverse reaction to the branding mistake.

From GROK: "The Busch family's response: Billy Busch, an heir to the original Busch brewing family, publicly criticized Anheuser-Busch InBev (the parent company) for the partnership. He stated that he wanted to "make Bud Light great again" and even offered to buy the brand back, criticizing the parent company's handling of the situation."

What I learned from the Cracker Barrel ordeal is that I have come to despise large brands and their influence on our lives. Endless advertisements bombard us every minute of the day on the technology that we keep near to inflict that attack on ourselves. Most of it - 90+% - is all fake and overstated crap. If it is a food item, it is full of chemicals that will hurt your health.

The ordeal made me long for living in the country with only a general store (like the one I had as a kid in rural PA) offering many fewer choices but all made fresher and more naturally.

No aisle length freezers packed with a half dozen brands of ice cream in every manufactured dream "flavor" one could imagine - but if left at room temperature too long wouldn't melt into a puddle of cream. It would still be standing tall looking like it was ready to the scooped out due to the stabilizers and emulsifiers added to the other chemicals.

A good summer night when I was a kid was when my mom and dad said, "Let's get an ice cream cone at the Dairy Bar". And, if you didn't lick it fast enough, it melted and ran down your arm. It didn't stay in the cone like some of the brands today.

I long for those days.

Once upon a time the government gave civil service tests. So did companies. The tests screened potential hires for competence and personality fit with the organization. The organizations promoted from within so the guy or gal at entry level dealing with the public at the counter or selling the company's products to its users could rise to Director or VP of Marketing or even company President if they worked hard and performed well.

But a certain group was not passing the civil service tests in the same number as everyone else. This meant, of course, that the government had to get rid of the screening tests. Companies read the writing on the Equal Opportunity Office wall and got rid of the competency tests, too.

What to do? For companies, the easy answer to get the most competent people was hire from the Ivy League schools that did the screening for them with SAT minimum scores.

But these Ivies with expensive MBA's and no real world experience were not about to start at entry level dealing with customers who used the company products. Instead, they entered management where their decisions could carried the most weight and they didn't have to listen to customer complaints.

For a while, things went smoothly. MBA's from Harvard Business School shrunk packages while maintaining the price, outsourced manufacturing to China and replaced ingredients like milk and sugar with multisyllabic compounds that extended the shelf life of white bread beyond the average person's lifetime. Profits were good.

Then, one day the Ivies started teaching that "the customer is always right" means the customer is a right leaning MAGA Nazi Trump supporting homophobe racist.

And they still do.

The end.

Suzie's avatar

…so, they decided to totally ignore the customer entirely and do whatever the hell they wanted, when they wanted, the way they wanted, and doled out out billions and billions of taxpayer dollars in the process to all their like-minded friends around the world to aid in the process. Great job if you could get it.

I remember telling a friend, as soon as BHO got elected, that we had entered a new era; virtually if not literally EVERY AD, be it print or tv, HAD to have at least one black person in it, if not entirely black.

NOTE: The U.S. racial demographics in 2025 is 12.36% BLACK or AFRICAN AMERICAN, per Al Gore's Amazing Internet. Huh.

TeaPartyGal's avatar

Thank you for citing that 12.36% figure, Gail. We all know that alot of media focus on a group makes everyone think they are a larger portion of the population than they really are. Like, alot of people think 25-30% of the American population is gay/LBGTQ, whereas I think the actual population has never been more than 5-10%, if that.

So I thought I was savvy enough to not fall into that trap, but I actually am very surprised to hear than the current figure is only 12.36% black. Historically, I know the figure has hovered around 10%, but I had started to feel that in recent decades there had been a shift, and it was at least 15% if not 20%.

Geesh--all this twisting ourselves into pretzels over 12.36% of the population. Can't we all just settle down and be PEOPLE and put all this flesh-based identity crap behind us?

Don’t you just love the rate at which large companies are experiencing FAFO and are thinking twice before choosing ‘or else’?

Having spent decades in the bowels of the first billion dollar company (known as X on the NYSE); I am overcome with waves of Schadenfreude as the cycle of hubris and nemesis is replayed.

Isn’t Schadenfreude one of the best words ever!

My friend spent some time in Germany teaching English to school children. He told them there was no equivalent in English to "Schadenfreude." What a delicious word!

"Joy over misfortune" would be too long. "Delicious Dilemma" wouldn't be quite true to the original, but it has a ring to it.

Personally ,I prefer Supercalifragilisticexpialidosis.

How about "Salacious Sympathy"? That comes closer to Schadenfreude.

I couldn't get through the entire writing without making a comment. I will go back and read it all, Don, I promise, but few things get me riled up more than 'stupidity'. Does no one in American actually read the ad, or just the people with brains? "Jeans" is a play on words. "Genes" the corresponding homophone (that makes me laugh) has to do with our make up. Please send the following to every ignorant liberal you know - 'jeans' are what you wear, 'genes' are who you are. Sidney Sweeney has good 'jeans', American Eagle jeans. Great ad. The fact she is a beautiful desirable young woman is in her 'genes', and if you interpret 'jeans' to mean 'genes', you're are right on both counts. She looks good in jeans, but she is a beautiful woman - period. AND, I don't care if she is white. There is nothing wrong in being a beautiful white woman. 50 years ago, I could see them everywhere I looked, especially in Buenos Aires. But that's another story. There was a day Halle Berry could have knocked this ad out of the park. I am too far out of the loop anymore to name a new young and beautiful black actress/model, or an Indian one, or a Greek one, or (fill in the nationality here). The ad isn't about race. It's about beautiful women looking wonderful in jeans, plain old, been around forever, blue jeans. These happen to be American Eagle brand, and I hope the ad agency who came up with this makes a fortune helping other brands 'see the light'. Now, back to reading Don's fine writing.
