And no, I did not have health insurance--couldn't afford it. We saw doctors when we had to--mainly a pediatrician for the kids. We used OTC products and herbal medications. A couple of times I had to go to the ER for injuries (construction isn't the most dangerous occupation, but it's pretty high up on the list). And we paid off the bill over time. In 2015, at age 65, I got into Medicare, which I had been paying into for all those years. (BTW, most people don't know this, but SS and Medicare are a double tax--you pay half, and your employer pays the other half. When you're self-employed, you pay both parts of it.)
On the shutdown...there's an old saying in politics--"Read the room." The Dems aren't reading the room; they're reading their own little corner of it, and acting to please that corner. Most of them are completely out of touch with the people they supposedly represent (granted, too many of the Repubs aren't much better!). But it's starting to bite them, and it's likely to get worse before it gets better. How many more "80-20% issues" can they rack up before they face reality?

The very first morning news report I heard yesterday on the radio was about how devastating the shutdown would be for the economy of “suburban Maryland”, meaning the counties in that state which surround DC. Maybe then, some young families might be able to afford a house in that area.
I live in a red state. We’re not feeling the shutdown at all. Even if it goes on for weeks, we probably will not feel much of anything.
