The only way Thune could have protected Cornyn was by getting the Save Act passed. The senate just recently confirmed 49 Trump nominees by voice vote - which shows that if Thune wanted to get the Save Act passed, he could do it. But, obviously he doesn't want it passed.

If Thune is on the ticket in the general election, the faithful in SD have no choice but to hold their nose as they pull the lever for Thune. I don't like my Rep (Mike Lawler), but I have no choice - I don't think he's being challenged in 2026. Only way to get rid of RINO's like Thune is to primary them - hope that happens in 2028.

There aren't that many conservative senators willing to challenge the GOP senate leader as they fear retribution. Rick Scott challenged Mitch McConnell at Trump's urging but lost to McConnell 37 to 10. Scott was was disinvited from speaking at a GOP leadership press conference & damaged his relationships within the party and left him politically isolated - particularly within McConnell’s inner circle (Thune, Cornyn, Shelley Moore Capito, Barrasso).
Does Thune actually think he can outmaneuver the guy who literally wrote the book on negotiating? With the Turtle, Tillis, Cassidy, and Cornryn (hopefully) gone, his RINO posse is getting mighty small. Maybe he should pass the mantle of Senate Majority Leader on to someone who is capable of getting things done instead of trying to wait out PDJT.
It would be nice to get a real conservative senate majority leader - but, that's the last thing the RINO caucus wants. The scale has to be tipped so that the conservatives outnumber the RINO's - only then is it possible to get conservative leadership.
I cannot think of even one Republican leader, House or Senate, that was ever even worth anything. The only exception was Newt Gingrich who masterminded nationalizing the 1994 mid-terms and winning Republican control of the House for the first time in more than 40 years. Think of the rest of them - Trent Lott, Kevin McCarthy, Paul Ryan, Turtle-boy McConnell, John Boehner, and others I forget. These jerks were basically completely useless and worthless- but that is the way Republicans roll when they are just cosplaying being on our side.
There are a few. Brandon Gill is impressive. As is Chip Roy (who is retiring and hopefully will be next TX AG) Likewise the marvelous Harriet Hageman who I believe is running for a state office in WY. Some others, not perfect but better than negative, among the Senate: Hawley, Johnson, Kennedy, Eric Schmitt, Moreno.

I think the October surprise will center around two things: finishing off Iran and gas prices. If Trump doesn’t get the “dust” in our hands and gas prices are still 2 cents higher than before the Iranian engagement I think there are enough lemmings to believe the world is coming to an end. The media will play it that way. Are there enough lemmings to follow?

Unfortunately, by the midterms gas prices are likely to be $2 higher than before Trump chose to attack Iran, and it was a choice that will have many of us scratching our heads into 2027 every time we hear the words "Speaker Jeffries." Is Trump playing 4-D chess, or is he still being played by forces that seek to destroy him? Energy costs drive the cost of everything, and those costs will continue to trickle down right into November. Checkmate.
Don't give up on the SAVE Act just yet. That will be a game changer and the Trumpster is working it. Thune is watching his buddies leave the nest and he will feel the heat. I'm for letting the man work. The Trumpster has got this.

I'm glad that Trump does what he believes is best for America and has little regard for the stupid optics. And gas will not be $2 higher. The price will collapse once Iran is sorted out. We don't deserve Trump when so many second-guess him like you are doing. I think he is great and is doing what needs to be done. But go elect Democrats and see what the price of gas is then.
The October surprise will be a combination of Russiagate (Brennen, Comey, Obama, McCabe) and a stolen 2020 election with scary, impossible to deny, evidence. That is, evidence of a treasonous coup that was working at many levels to destroy this country.

Interesting analysis by Don, as usual, and I am optimistic that maintaining republican (or rather, "Trumpian") majorities in House and Senate is a realistic goal. I have nothing of substance to add, but being a compulsive commenter (look it up in the latest DSM) I must first ask, what is it with plumbers? Remember "Joe (Wurlzerbacher) the Plumber" who confronted Obama on his desire to increase taxes on small business? A hero for the ages. Now Markwayne Mullin, another plumber with vast stores of practical knowledge and wisdom. We might now christen Mark and Joe as partners in "Super Mario Bros. Plumbing." Also, about that "libertarian" Massie and his concern with transportation of raw milk across state lines. Libertarians, broadly defined are individuals who are interested in two things: open borders and dope. I suspect those two concerns may be overlapping aspects of the same goofy phenomenon, but I haven't researched the topic exhaustively. Like I haven't researched the sex lives of South American anteaters exhaustively either, because the subject matter is so miniscule and irrelevant that it holds no interest for me. Come to think of it, that actually might be even more interesting than the study of "libertarian" theory. Gotta mull that one over. And finally, on the subjcet of Massie, has anyone stopped to ask, "Why does the corporate leftist media celebrate politicians like him and MTG, Liz Cheney, Dan Crenshaw, Cryin' Adam Kinsinger, Murkowski (when she opposes Trump), etc.?" Clearly it is because they are actually democrat wolves in republican sheep clothing. The moment any republican politician receives an accolade in the corporate media you can assure yourself that he or she (or xe or it) is a democrat at heart, which is to say, an America-hating communist. Re Plumbers: I've noticed that people with real life experience in productive jobs tend to be problem solvers, rather than empty-headed politicians who spew hot air and accomplish nothing other than enriching themselves at our expense. I used to believe physicians fell into the former category, but pharma whores like Cassidy disabused me of that notion.
